WOOD ON GLASS WEDNESDAY Welcome to our 'Wood on Glass Wednesday' series where we feature one of our Wood on Glass images and description every Wednesday! This image from William T. Clarke is of a cook standing next to a table set for at least 40 men inside the Hammersley Boarding House (Clinton County). Camp Cooks and Cookees could be women or men. Women were often employed as a cost savings measure and were family of the man responsible for hiring the camp crew. Cooks were responsible for making and serving all of the meals for the camp workers. The size of the crew varied from camp to camp and season to season, but it was not uncommon for the size of some camps to reach about 80 at times (sometimes larger). One estimate believes that a wood hick (lumberjack) would have needed to consume around 5,000 calories or more per day in order to sustain their level of work. This photo is also featured in the Diversity Research Study Report which is available on our website, https://lnkd.in/eta3j7Z7

Today is the first day of National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), when we take extra time to emphasize what is true year-round: work zones on our roadways are where real people work, and struck-by injuries are a leading cause of death, and THE leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the construction industry. Every worker deserves to go home safely at the end of the day. Slow down and pay attention in work zones. #NWZAW #orange4safety #safety #workzonesafety #workzoneawareness

Public views sought on Public Space Protection Orders. Take the questionnaire👇 https://lnkd.in/gS5fPype @lancaster-city-council is asking residents and businesses for their views on the renewal of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) to tackle anti-social behaviour and irresponsible dog owners. In 2021 a new set of PSPOs was introduced to provide police and authorised officers with additional powers to crackdown on behaviour causing ‘annoyance, harassment, alarm or distress’, including alcohol-related anti-social behaviour or disorder. Areas they cover include Lancaster City Centre, Morecambe, Lower Heysham (covering Heysham village and barrows), Williamson Park and Happy Mount Park. Before renewing the orders, the city council would like to hear people’s views on whether any adjustments need to be made. The consultation also covers a set of dog control PSPOs to provide the council with powers to deal with issues such as fouling on our streets and parks, and ensuring dogs are kept under control. Councillor Peter Jackson, cabinet member with responsibility for communities, wellbeing and partnerships, said: “These PSPOs play an important part in ensuring that people who live, work and visit our district can do so in peace and in a place where they feel safe and welcomed. “Before deciding whether to renew them we welcome the views of local residents and businesses on the current restrictions imposed by the PSPOs and any further suggestions of measures that would further improve public safety.” The associated documentation and online questionnaire can be found online at https://lnkd.in/gS5fPype and the closing date for the consultation is Wednesday August 14. If you have any further queries on either the PSPOs or the consultation, email communitysafety@lancaster.gov.uk. - - - #MorecambeBID #LancasterCityCouncil #Morecambe #CommunitySafety #HaveYourSay #LocalBusinesses

Getting tree workers actively involved in safety is a crucial and multifaceted role. It begins with cultivating a culture that prioritizes safety awareness and empowers workers to take ownership of their well-being. Providing comprehensive training programs equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to identify potential risks and adhere to safety protocols. Encouraging open communication fosters a collaborative environment where workers feel comfortable reporting concerns and sharing insights. Additionally, recognizing and rewarding safety-conscious behavior reinforces the importance of their role in creating a secure working environment. Ultimately, a collective commitment to safety transforms tree workers into proactive partners in preserving both their own welfare and the health of the ecosystems they serve. ~ Mike Henry - CTSP #arborist #Treewoker #treewokersafety #safety #trees

Maintenance of doors is essential for reasons of legal compliance, functionality, and safety. Depending on the intended use of the door, building owners or managers may be bound by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, The Workplace (Health Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Specialist contractors are often required for door maintenance, and they should be experienced with the specific doors on the site due to variations in maintenance requirements. Some sites will include a variety of door types, all of which will have their own requirements for maintenance. They work while we sleep. Sometimes we walk around them in the halls not always “seeing” them or their work as important. That’s why we love this day, National Custodian Day, which rolls around every October 2. It recognizes the hard work that it takes to keep our public facilities in tip-top shape as well as the people who dilligently work, often at low wages, to make sure we have schools and workplaces that are spotless and sanitary. Custodians are our first line of defense of the war on germs and often, it’s a thankless task. So, on National Custodian Day, show your appreciation to the custodians who clean the office buildings or schools that you frequent. As far we’re concerned, custodians are the hardest-working people in show business! #NationalCustodianAppreciationDay #NationalCustodianDay #CustodianAppreciation #Custodians
