#DidYouKnow the water footprint of a single cup of coffee is estimated to be around 37 gallons? Food is something we can’t live without, and it takes more than 800 gallons of water to grow the food one person consumes in a day. Unfortunately, state and federal restrictions are limiting the water available for farmers to grow food, increasing our reliance on imported products. It’s become essential to capitalize on wet years to bank water for dry periods. Great article in Ag Alert by Mike Wade about the footprint of water in food production and also the amount of water used for many non food items. It does take water for farmers to produce healthy food but it also takes a lot of water to produce almost everything else. Perspective is very important!

With 60% of agricultural #water in the U.S. coming from surface sources like rivers, which are more prone to contamination, precise #watertreatment systems are vital for California’s produce safety. How We Keep Produce Safe: Advanced systems, such as EMEC’s LD SERIES controllers, help maintain strict water quality standards with real-time monitoring of pH and chlorine levels, continuously protecting crops against contamination risks. By investing in effective water treatment, #California’s agriculture industry strengthens its defense against contaminants, supporting food safety for millions. Happy Agriculture Societies Day! With increasing food, transportation and supply chain costs, it’s time to pay attention to the issue of food insecurity. I believe we need solutions to create economic viability and to create long term health and sustainability of the agri-food industry. If we don’t, impending crisis will occur. Protecting #WaterQuality is essential for food production, public safety, and environmental health. See how a team of scientists is helping farmers manage fertilizers, which provide nutrients to crops but can pollute water if applied improperly: https://buff.ly/4foRjdz This project is supported in part by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture #WaterQualityMonth

Great Meeting with Representative Vince Fong (CA-20th) Today, the Family Farm Alliance had the pleasure of meeting with Representative Vince Fong to discuss the critical issues facing California’s agricultural community. We emphasized the importance of protecting Western irrigated agriculture, which serves as the backbone of our nation’s food supply. With inflation and rising grocery prices being top a concern for many Americans in 2024, it’s crucial that we continue to support the farmers and ranchers who provide for us all. We talked about how increased input and transportation costs are pushing grocery prices higher, and how domestic food production must be prioritized to avoid even higher costs from global competition. Western U.S. agriculture is vital, and protecting water access and ensuring flexible water management are essential to sustaining our production capacity. Now is the time to strengthen this sector, not reduce farmland—especially as drought and regulatory challenges continue to strain resources. Thanks, Rep. Fong, for your ongoing support of our farmers and ranchers! #FamilyFarmAlliance #WesternIrrigatedAgriculture #FoodSecurity #WaterAccess #InflationConcerns

The EU grows nearly 2/3 of grain exclusively to feed farmed animals. Yet, most of this food gets lost in the conversion from feed to food for people. Every 100 calories of grain fed to animals results in only 27 calories of chicken for human consumption – and even less for pork and beef. If the EU ended its use of grain to feed factory farmed animals, they could take impactful steps to reduce food loss and feed more people. Call on EU leaders for a fair food & farming transition - sign the petition ➡ https://ciwf.end.it/sign/ #EndIt #FLWDay
