The state-owned China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is set to build Angola’s first highway, a roughly 1,400-km-long road linking the north and south of the country. Carlos dos Santos, Angolan minister of public works, urbanism and housing, explained that the highway, stretching from the province of Cunene in the south to the northwestern provinces of Zaire and Cabinda, will also connect the country to neighbouring Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. CRBC will begin studies “soon after” the signing of a memorandum of understanding, scheduled to take place during the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing between 3 and 8 September. Feasibility studies should be finalised by the “middle or end of 2025,” at which point CRBC will invest “around US$50-75 million” in the project. https://lnkd.in/gsdBauS6

The government had long been planning to construct a high-standard east-west highway that would connect the country's principle cities, thereby alleviating the existing transportation constraints. China State Construction Engineering Corporation has taken on the responsibility of constructing the No. 1 National Highway in the Republic of the Congo, which has become the largest infrastructure project in the history of China-Congo cooperation. The 536-kilometer road starts from Pointe-Noire, the Congo's second largest city, and ends in Brazzaville, the capital. The project brought many benefits. It has created over 10,000 local jobs, provided various training opportunities, improved living standards, and cultivated technical personnel. The Chinese and Congolese governments and enterprises worked closely from 2008 to 2016 under the frameworks of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Through candid communication and sincere cooperation, they accomplished multiple major construction task. National Highway No. 1 in Congo is a fine model. It is a road of cooperation that boosts economic growth and people-to-people exchange. It is also a road of success, which brings hope, prosperity and progress to get more exciting achievements in the days to come.

What do you care? In West Africa, people in the construction industry are dealing with similar issues as globally, but with specific regional challenges and adaptations. Sustainable construction: Given the ecological diversity and challenges in West Africa, the development and implementation of sustainable construction practices that incorporate local resources and traditional building techniques are becoming increasingly important. Infrastructure: Developing and modernizing infrastructure is crucial for economic growth and social development in West Africa. This includes the construction of roads, bridges, ports, airports, railways, and other critical infrastructure facilities. Housing demand: Due to population growth and urbanization, many West African countries have a significant need for affordable housing. Developing cost-effective construction techniques and materials, as well as promoting social housing programs, are central to addressing this need. Local building standards and regulations: Compliance with and enforcement of building standards and regulations are important to ensure the quality and safety of construction projects. This requires collaboration between governments, construction professionals, and the private sector. Local construction materials and techniques: Utilizing local building materials and traditional construction techniques can help reduce reliance on imported materials and improve the resilience of structures to local climatic conditions. LC3 (Limestone Calcined Clay Cement) is an innovative type of cement that is less environmentally damaging than conventional Portland cement, as it uses limestone and calcined clay as its main constituents. LC3 could be a promising alternative in West Africa, where the availability of limestone and clay is high, to reduce the environmental impact of construction projects while supporting the local economy. All of these topics were discussed on and off stage at this year's ICCX West Africa in #Accra. We look forward to seeing you again in 2026. I love the interest and interaction with our guests, especially in West Africa every guest has a thirst for knowledge. #iccx #experts #precast #concrete #sustainibility

As far back as the 1960s, architects of African integration agreed that building infrastructure was vital to lubricate the wheels of intra-African trade and distribute its benefits regionally. The continent's leaders embarked on ambitious projects such as the trans-African highways -- segments of which would eventually stretch from Cairo to Dakar, Tripoli to Windhoek and Lagos to Mombasa. These would provide access to the sea to 15 landlocked countries and improve regional links. #WeKnowAfrica

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced the construction of a 288-meter, two-lane cable-stayed reinforced concrete bridge over the Cavally River, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia. This marks a significant step in regional integration and infrastructure development for West Africa. The official site handover took place on October 3, 2024, at the Prollo border, marking the beginning of the physical works, expected to last 24 months. According to a statement released by ECOWAS, the bridge is a crucial part of the Praia-Dakar-Abidjan corridor, aligning with the regional body’s Vision 2050. The bridge is designed to withstand environmental challenges in the area, ensuring its long-term resilience. ECOWAS officials emphasised that the structure is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating trade, reducing transportation costs, and boosting job creation in both Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia. Yemen’s strategic location and attractive natural resources have been a curse for the region as global powers are locked in a seemingly never-ending battle for control of the abundant oil and gas available. For 129 years, Aden in the southern region was under direct British rule, until independence was won in 1967. In the decades following, Yemen was plagued by wars as local factions competed to assume the control left by the British. A bloody war that killed thousands in 1986 inspired southern leadership to seek unification with the north, creating Yemen as we know it today in 1990. Sadly, unification also failed to achieve its goals and another bitter war broke out in 1994. Today, the country is suffering a severe humanitarian crisis as the current nine year US-backed and Saudi-led war continues to enable the looting of Yemen’s resources. This war has killed more than 377,000 people, 70% of whom were children. 4.5 million people have been internally displaced and nearly half of the country, 14.5 million people, do not have enough food. The following resources aim to provide a way in to understanding the situation today and how you can support. But they also aim to present some of Yemen’s beauty and entrepreneurial spirit beyond the headlines of war. We hope you find them useful: https://lnkd.in/dcybvX8E Image by: Fahd Ahmed

The Boke-Quebo road project, representing a substantial investment of US$126.8 million, aims to significantly enhance connectivity between Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, contributing to the broader Dakar-Lagos road corridor. This endeavor not only promises to streamline transportation and trade between the two nations but also to foster regional integration throughout West Africa. Focused on constructing and asphalting over 107 km of road, along with the construction and repair of multiple bridges, the project underscores a comprehensive approach to infrastructure development. Incorporating the expertise of both local and international firms, including Mali’s Cira SAS and Guinea's West Ingenierie for supervision, and entrusting construction to China Railway Seventh Group and a consortium of Mauritanian companies, underscores a collaborative model aimed at advancing this pivotal infrastructure project. With Phase 1 receiving support from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the European Union, and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) funding a segment of the project, the Boke-Quebo road stands as a transformative initiative for the region, with completion targeted by December 2026. Soil Solutions can offer invaluable assistance in this transformative project by providing innovative and sustainable solutions for road construction and maintenance. Leveraging advanced technologies in soil stabilization and dust control, Soil Solutions can enhance the project’s efficiency and environmental sustainability. Our Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) Solution can be applied to improve the durability and longevity of the road surfaces, reducing the need for extensive maintenance while ensuring the road remains operational throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. Additionally, our approach minimizes environmental impact, aligning with the project's goals to foster regional integration and development sustainably. Through collaboration with Soil Solutions, the Boke-Quebo road project can achieve enhanced performance, cost-effectiveness, and a reduced environmental footprint, contributing to the infrastructure's resilience and the region's prosperity.
