Surely shipping hydrogen, made from renewable electricity, across the Atlantic, to meet US need for decarbonisation as not as efficient use of this technology as addressing the electricity that we import from South Africa which is largely made from fossil fuels. I understand this decision from an economic point of view but not from an environmental one.
Namibia approves Nam-US green hydrogen cooperation Namibia's Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States of America, aimed at accelerating the development of renewable energy and clean hydrogen projects in the country. The decision was formalised following the Cabinet's endorsement of the agreement, which aims to enhance cooperation between the two nations in the crucial areas. https://lnkd.in/dqqF9GBm #namibia #UnitedStatesofAmerica #US #greenhydrogen #RenewableEnergy Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) Emma Theofelus Tom Alweendo Green Hydrogen Namibia James Mnyupe, CA(SA)(Nam), CFA, CFP NamGHA . “Call issued for #renewables investments in Africa” November 18, 2024, - Aida Čučuk “European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have launched the global campaign ‘Scaling up Renewables in Africa’ during the Global Citizen NOW event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.” “#COP28 had set the target of tripling #renewableenergy and doubling #energyefficiency worldwide, and to achieve these goals, investments will be necessary. According to the Commission, this new campaign is meant to mobilize investments into renewables in Africa, to tap into its “enormous” potential.” “As disclosed, the campaign will rely on the policy support of the #InternationalEnergyAgency and will seek to drive new commitments on policy and finance from governments, financial institutions, the private sector and philanthropists. Coordinated with the international advocacy organization Global Citizen, it will conclude around the G20 summit in South Africa in November 2025.” “This initiative builds on the EU-Africa Global Gateway Investment Package, which supports Africa through projects jointly identified in priority areas. As per the Commission, Global Gateway projects focus on accelerating the green and digital transition, creating sustainable growth and jobs, as well as supporting health systems and improving education and training. The package contains €150 billion worth of investments and is also designed to attract investments from the private sector.” https://lnkd.in/eme3NgaA Source- original post Read all my posts #MariusPreston

🔋 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) Africa’s latest policy brief, “Africa’s Gas Road to Nowhere: South Africa’s Policy Debate on Using Gas to Accelerate the Energy Transition,” cautions that scaling back on renewables in favour of gas threatens the country’s long-term sustainability goals. Simon Baloyi, CEO of Sasol, in a recent conversation with Business Day highlighted the need for South Africa to seriously consider hydrogen as an energy source. He said that "there's space for hydrogen" and underscored the importance of leveraging both grey and green hydrogen to catalyse the country’s energy market. 💵 Simon also noted that while the current hydrogen price is a barrier, it is expected to decrease as the market evolves, with South Africa well-positioned to lead the hydrogen revolution. With the potential to drive the hydrogen economy, not just domestically but across the African energy market, how can South Africa accelerate the adoption of this and other renewable energy sources to build a robust ecosystem that supports its energy transition? 💬 Join the conversation. 📚 Read the brief here https://lnkd.in/g7UaWGSZ #HydrogenEconomy #EnergyTransition #SouthAfrica #RenewableEnergy #SustainableFuture #Innovation

South Africa is making significant progress in Africa’s energy transition with an $8.5B "Just Energy Transition Plan", focusing on renewables, green hydrogen, and EVs. Its strong policies and global partnerships are transforming the sector. Countries like Egypt, Morocco and Kenya are stepping up, but broader commitment across Africa is needed to meet the 300 GW renewable goal by 2030. Spark Africa, through its initiatives, could play a significant role in supporting the 300 GW renewable energy target by championing green energy projects, driving policy advocacy, and working with local communities to promote sustainable energy solutions. With projects aimed at boosting green energy infrastructure and creating a marketplace for renewable energy solutions, Spark Africa could help facilitate the transition to a greener future for the continent. It’s time for more nations to match Africa Union's ambition and drive the green revolution!🌱 #SPAKA #GreenEnergy #Africa #SparkAfrica #ClimateAction

The EU’s energy commissioner Kadri Simson has signed agreements for a total of €53.9m funding from the bloc for green hydrogen and renewables in Africa, of which €36.9m has been pegged for investments in Namibia. The bloc has pledged €50m to Namibian and South African hydrogen-focused funds, including €25m for the SDG Namibia One fund, one of the backers behind the 3GW Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project. However, the recipients of the remaining €25m have yet to be confirmed. Simson also signed off on a €1.2m grant agreement for Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Programme and €2.7m via the EU's “Get.transform” technical assistance programme for wider renewable energy deployment in the country. The EU last year pledged €1bn in public and private finance, including from its Global Gateway initiative, towards Namibia’s energy transition. These developments showcase that governments around the world are backing hydrogen as the fuel of the future. José Manuel Entrecanales, chairman and CEO of ACCIONA, stated today that "it is worrying that the US, Europe, and other advanced economies only installed 20% of the world’s new renewable energy capacity in 2023," when their share of the global GDP exceeds 50%. According to José Manuel Entrecanales, this imbalance is due to the fact that "the main element for attraction of capital, which is key to developing #renewableenergy, is not working as well as it should. We tend to forget that the overwhelming element that moves private capital is the risk-reward equation. This needs to be enhanced to match the excellent performance of China in this industry." #IRENA14A
