"I am thrilled to share a glimpse into one of the captivating lessons happening in our Young Engineers program! 🚀 Last week, our aspiring engineers delved into the fascinating world of towing mechanisms, exploring the intricate dynamics between towing and towed parts in a towing system. In this engaging session, our young innovators had the opportunity to get hands-on with towed and towing cars, unraveling the mechanics behind their connection. From understanding the concept of a towing joint mechanism to experimenting with different setups, our students showcased immense curiosity and enthusiasm throughout. One of the highlights of the lesson was the discovery that a single tow hitch proves to be a more efficient solution than a double-tow hitch—a valuable insight that underscores the importance of optimization and innovation in engineering design. Moreover, our budding engineers embarked on an exciting experiment, placing the movable joint on the side of the towed car. Witnessing firsthand how the towing car initiates the turn, followed by the towed car, sparked profound curiosity and ignited a deeper understanding of vehicle dynamics. At the heart of our Young Engineers program lies the spirit of exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Working in pairs, our students embraced teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, laying the foundation for future innovation and excellence. 🎓 Wrapping Up the Semester with an Electrifying Project! ⚙️🤖 As the semester is almost over, I would like to share a video summary of one of the most exciting projects I’ve undertaken so far in my engineering journey (and no, it’s not a senior design project… yet!). Meet Pop-Shock, a battle-bot designed and built as the final project for my Introduction to Mechanical Engineering course under the guidance of Professor Misael Martinez. This project gave us an incredible opportunity to apply everything we learned in class, combining creativity, teamwork, and technical skills. Pop-Shock was constructed using a 2WD cart kit and features both offensive and defensive mechanisms made from affordable materials. Staying within the 12-inch dimension requirements, the design integrated a balloon mounted above the robot for the competition. The end result? An amazing battle-bot equipped with spikes and a taser—a blend of electrical and mechanical systems ready to take on any challenge! While the robot performed well against its competitors, there’s always room for improvement: 🔧 Adding longer spikes to reach into opponents’ baskets ⚡ Increasing the taser strength 🛡️ Incorporating a protective basket for the balloon The experience of battling our creations against our classmates' robots was electrifying. It reaffirmed my passion for engineering and my excitement for what lies ahead in my academic and professional journey. In the end, I believe that was precisely the goal of this class... Today marked a significant milestone as we launched the very first “Introduction to Electronics and Software” training course at Bentley Motors in Crewe, in partnership with North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College from the MIRA Technology Institute. This innovative training package is the result of countless hours of collaboration with Bentley’s subject matter expert and numerous pilot sessions, all aimed at equipping their teams with the skills necessary for the software-defined vehicle revolution. A huge thank you to Bradie Hawksworth and Paul Williamson for their dedication in traveling to Crewe to deliver this groundbreaking program. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Ian Bouma is a senior in the Lean Systems Engineering Technology program and will be among the first cohorts to graduate in May 2025. He completed a year-long co-op at Toyota Powertrain and worked this past summer as a Manufacturing Engineer Intern at Boston Whaler in Edgewater, Florida. In addition to his academic pursuits, Ian is the Co-President and Founder of the Engineering Technology Club. He serves as the President of the Automotive Club at the University of Kentucky. During our recent lab, I worked on a setup where the extension of one cylinder caused others to oscillate. This demonstrates the fascinating interplay of hydraulics and mechanics—critical concepts for engineering applications in automation, robotics, and industrial machinery.
