The Center for Solidarity with Alternative Universities (CSAU) of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES, also known as Rojava) has issued a call for contributions for the online symposium Decolonizing Knowledge and Science: Breaking Isolation and Weaving Solidarity with the Universities of North and East Syria/Rojava! From the symposium description: "The symposium starts from decolonizing knowledge that was developed from the Kurdish movements and freedom struggles with the goal of building self-organized democratic societies. Particularly in the self-governed autonomous region in North and East Syria (NES), which also includes historical 'Rojava', the newly established universities are themselves participatory and democratic in their topics, methodologies and organizational structures. In a new and innovative way, the academic institutions in NES are combining theory and praxis as activist scholarship for the overall social processes of freedom and autonomy through women's liberation, sustainable ecology and grassroots democracy." There are five working groups that will collaborate from today, November 13, until the symposium is held on February 20, 2025: 1. Collaborative Teaching Working Group 2. International Collaborative Research Working Group 3. Access to Resources and Equipment Working Group 4. Translation of Education Materials Working Group 5. Recognition/Accreditation of NES Universities Working Group Read more and get involved at the link below to help establish much-needed networks of collaboration and solidarity between the universities of Rojava and the world: https://lnkd.in/gjqJMzgN.

Really excited to be part of this amazingly diverse group of scholars. To save your scrolling through the long list to M, I've pasted the details of my project below. Can't wait to get started and do get in touch if you want to chat all things retirement and retirement gifts! Tokens of Esteem: Retirement gifts in Modern Britain 1860-1930 The ‘Tokens of Esteem: Retirement gifts in Modern Britain 1861-1930’ project will investigate the material culture of retirement from the Victorian period up to 1930. Between 1860 and 1930 large companies started to bureaucratise employment relationships. This saw the rise in occupational pension schemes, and a new stage of life, retirement, became accessible to more people. Gifts and presentations had long been a part of working culture, but with the creation of a new stage of life we see a new ritual develop. This project will examine how and why the practice of retirement gifts developed in the early years of its practice and what it tells us about life and work relationships as well as how old age and retirement was viewed by different people from different roles around the country. It forms part of a larger book project examining the culture of retirement between 1860 and 1930.

🌍 Scholars At Risk 2024 Global Congress: Empowering Scholars and Protecting Academic Freedom 🎓 We are thrilled to share the highlights of the Scholars At Risk (SAR) 2024 Global Congress, held in Vilnius, Lithuania, from June 25-27. This event, in partnership with the European Humanities University, gathered scholars, advocates, students, and professionals from across the globe to explore the theme "Sustainable Knowledge: Lessons from Universities, Scholars, and Students in Exile." Key discussions spanned from the challenges faced by scholars in Afghanistan, Belarus, and Ukraine to broader global issues of academic freedom. The Congress also featured the 'Courage to Think' dinner, where the SAR Courage to Think Award was presented to the courageous scholars of Ukraine. Additionally, the Congress was a prime opportunity for participants to forge new connections and strengthen existing ones, furthering our collective mission to protect academic freedom worldwide. We are proud of the role LinkedIn can play in connecting scholars and advocates across the world, fostering collaboration, and amplifying the voices of those at risk. Together, we can create a global network of support and solidarity. "𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 #𝗖𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗦 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻-𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀!" Project 20: "Evaluating access to information policies: A comparative study across two continents".✨ - Coordinators: Vincent Mabillard et Giovanni Esposito (Université libre de Bruxelles), Alaimo Leonardo(Sapienza Università di Roma), Constantin Marius Profiroiu (Universitatea din București), Martial Pasquier(Université de Lausanne), Hlengiwe Ndlovu (University of the Witwatersrand), John Sseruyange(Makerere University) - Event Date: 01/03/2025 - Location: Université libre de Bruxelles - Theme: HUB 4 : Cities, Spaces, Mobilities 🔍 Project Overview: Transparency is at the heart of strong governance and trust between citizens and their governments. This exciting CIVIS-funded project unites universities from Europe and Africa to tackle the critical issue of Freedom of Information (FOI) implementation. The project builds on innovative research conducted in Belgium. By replicating evaluation exercises across these diverse contexts, the team aims to develop a shared understanding of how FOI policies can be better assessed and improved. The initiative will include workshops, citizen involvement, and collaborative research, fostering a comparative approach to transparency across continents. 🤝 Why this collaboration matters: This project is more than just research; it’s a bridge connecting diverse perspectives to address shared challenges in public governance. By involving academics, civil society, and even citizen scientists, it highlights the power of collaboration to improve transparency policies globally. The diversity of the team (drawing on expertise in public administration, sociology, and policy evaluation) ensures rich, multidisciplinary insights. This initiative will not only advance research but also enrich teaching by integrating "Global South" perspectives into classrooms, creating lasting educational and professional exchanges that strengthen ties across continents. Together, these efforts embody the spirit of #CIVIS: united for knowledge and progress. Stay tuned for the next presentation of other projects receiving seed funding from #CIVIS!

Funding opportunity for researchers at risk! The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) has launched its latest call for their Solidarity Fund for the academic year 2025-2026. Through this Solidarity Fund, ULB aims to support researchers who can longer carry out their activities in their country of origin, where they are exposed to risks due to the content of their research work or the free expression of their opinions. More information may be found here: https://lnkd.in/e3VbXiCY The deadline for the Solidary Fund is 15 December 2024. If you are interested in learning more about the risks that scholars, and others, experience due to their research and academic work, please see Scholars at Risk's Free to Think 2024 report, which may be found here: https://lnkd.in/eBV_Qrp2

Young Academies (YAs) are academic organisations, often linked to National Academies of Science, that gather young #scientists and #scholars from all disciplines, often at the start of their independent careers. YAs can serve as interfaces with national and multilateral policy. As part of their goals to build awareness and competencies for early-career researchers to engage with international policy organisations, we were recently invited to develop and facilitate tailored workshops for two YAs: the Sveriges unga akademi and the Swiss Young Academy in collaboration with Reatch. Indeed, universities must drive social innovation by broadening impact, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, and integrating critical thinking in education. Highlights from the introductory panel discussion at the ERUA-European Reform University Alliance 4th Annual Summit "Social Innovations for Transformative Society" by Katia Dupret #SOCIN24 #WeAreERUA #SocialInnovation #HigherEducation #Collaboration #CriticalThinking #SocietalImpact

What role should and can universities play in strengthening social innovation addressing societal challenges? 🌻learning from civil society expertise 🌻go beyond business and technology innovation - including the humanities and social sciences 🌻integrate critical thinking in education and competence development 🌻broadening our impact definitions 🌻nurture and facilitate cross disciplinary and cross sectoral collaboration This necessitates that universities: 💥redefine assessment metrics to include cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration 💥stop the competition on rankings based on criteria that are far away from indicating societal engagement and social innovation capabilities 💥include stakeholders as co-cocreators of societal relevance/impact indicators 💥structurally nurture and support teaching and competence development focusing on critical thinking. NIAS kondigt boycotmaatregelen aan: "Standing up for academic freedoms for all scholars. The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS-KNAW) is committed to academic freedoms. NIAS seeks to protect and foster the freedom of scholars to design and conduct their own research, and to safely communicate the insights and results gained. The fulfillment of these basic needs of scholars is a precondition for academic and public debate, and thus a cornerstone of democracy. As a research institute we choose not to issue general political statements, although we obviously condemn all violence against civilians. We are specifically concerned with situations in which academic freedoms are under threat, including those that have followed upon the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th and the Israeli war in Gaza, in particular the scholasticide or total devastation of the academic infrastructure in Gaza. NIAS aims to grant equal freedoms and rights to all researchers, whatever their nationality or affiliation. In March this year we have therefore extended our Safe Haven Fellowship Program to all scholars at risk, including those affected by the war in Gaza. As for our cooperation with Israeli scholars NIAS will work by the following rules: NIAS will not invite to any of its activities or venues Israeli State officials, Israel-lobby group members and/or associates; NIAS staff will not professionally travel to Israel; NIAS staff will not take part in events anywhere that are (known to be) organized or sponsored by the State of Israel; NIAS will not accept bilateral funding from the State of Israel or from Israeli universities and research institutes. There are currently no such projects ongoing at NIAS; NIAS will not end its participation in the formal global and European networks in which it takes part, and of which the Israeli Institute for Advanced Study is a member. While remaining part of such networks, NIAS will uphold all above given policy lines; NIAS will not refrain from selecting Israeli scholars for its Fellowship programs, or for any of its advisory bodies; NIAS will expect full compliance of all at the institute with its Code of Conduct, by which discrimination, contempt, disruption of events, intimidation, and lack of academic integrity are not accepted." https://lnkd.in/eMXY_Hhk
