Not my words - a generous offering from London Mike Stevenson truly is a master of his craft.   He is a visionary speaker, able to embrace his audience with insight and prior knowledge – leaving them at once more knowledgeable and inspired. . He builds connection and trust within moments of taking the stage - a rare and precious skill.   He lives and was born in Edinburgh, but pulses with excitement when he gets to take the Scottish voice abroad.   Aye, that means England, Wales and all Ireland too.   It is a powerful voice and, in an accent, recently voted the World’s sexiest.   Don’t forget Scotland is where some of the most enlightened thinkers the world has ever known gave birth to so many ideas, philosophies and scientific and medical breakthroughs.   ‘I stand on the shoulders of giants and that fires me to greater heights.’ Mike says.   I saw him at a London Conference, and he brought such energy, humour and awe to the event.   He simply blew people away.   For me, he is unique among speakers, because he shifts you emotionally – then intellectually.   His experience and breadth of knowledge is by any measure astonishing.   When you have slept on the streets of London, worked in many industries, been a stage musician, appeared on film and TV, been gilded as a multi-award-winning entrepreneur, and repeatedly reinvented yourself you acquire spadefuls of knowledge and accumulated wisdom.   Very few global speakers can garner so many stories and anecdotes. That’s because very few have a life of such dramatic variation.   Mike’s stories live on, viscerally in his audience’s heads. Whether hilarious, heart-rending, or dramatic re-enactment.   Mike is a truly great Scottish export, who will bring a fine `Malt Whisky. ‘At an AXA Conference and Mike Sevenson has just delivered one of the most inspirational talks I've ever heard. Talked to the Financial Times and the superb Jim Pickard about the merits of businesses attending party conferences this year. The new political reality means corporates should only be going to Conservative conference if they have a specific reason to do so. The timelines for the Tory leadership contest certainly don't help. More generally, we advise our clients to think clearly about their reasons for going to conferences. Don't go just for the sake of it. Networking is fine, but have a clear rationale for going. What do you see in this picture? Huge congratulations to Elite Business Live for delivering the two-day business growth conference this week at St. Paul's in London. I was privileged to join Allyson Stewart-Allen, Garima Srivastava, and Kim Antoniou under the watchful eye of host Hannah Prevett on a mid-afternoon panel. The challenge for the panel, which my fellow panellists handled brilliantly was about how best to approach international expansion. Some of the key takeaways included 👉🏿 research is critical and there have never been such rich resources available, for free, online, and now augmented through AI agents, 👉🏿 investigate national and regional support, not only for funding but also to provide access to networks, 👉🏿 trust is key, focus efforts on identifying a local partners, supporters, champions, 👉🏿 forget our natural "British reserve" and don't hesitate to reach out and ask for help, 👉🏿 invest in understanding your legal responsibilities in markets, 👉🏿 be ready to adapt to different cultures and customs - it's great fun! 👉🏿 utilise diaspora networks to access in-country support (can't remember which panelist came up with this idea :) 👉🏿 and my favourite "It’s not about translation, it’s about transcreation" A tremendous event, a great venue, with very strong networking and exactly the right people in the room. The sessions were recorded and will be available in the near future so all can benefit from the highly valuable content shared on the day. But let's return to the picture, and my question, "What do you see?". As this is my article I'll share my own thoughts and leave you to add your own in the comments below. I see a lineup of business professionals on a stage, surely an everyday occurrence across our business world. I have sat on literally hundreds of such stages across the world and shared my insight into a myriad of subjects. But this picture is unique in my business life and one I am very proud to appear in. Can you guess why? When you are participating in a panel it's of course not possible to capture the key points made by your fellow panellists as you are too focused on listening and waiting for the opportunity to respond to the debate. Kelli, Alexis, and Jacqueline have risen from fresh AILA members to key positions in AILA national leadership. Their journey reminds us of the impact of dedication and commitment. In the "Hot Topics from AILA National" panel, Alexis (Second Vice President), Kelli (President-Elect), and Jacqueline (Treasurer) shared their insights on AILA's current state and its future. 🏆 Alexis's statement, "The fact that you are in this room means that you care," struck a chord. It reaffirmed my belief that immigration attorneys attend AILA conferences for more than just CLE credits; they are passionate about their clients and about shaping AILA's future. 🏆 Kelli's journey is particularly inspiring. From her first AILA conference in Chicago to being inaugurated as President at this year's national conference in the same city, it's a remarkable full circle. 🏆 Jacqueline has transformed what some may see as the mundane role of Treasurer into one of AILA's cornerstones. Her meticulous work is crucial for the organization's financial health and has earned accolades from external auditors. 🏆🏆🏆 What's the thread that connects Alexis, Kelli, and Jacqueline? A deep care for the cause and active involvement. They embody Robert Kennedy's saying, "The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better." They encouraged attendees to step up and lead within AILA, starting at the local chapter level. Another commonality? They are women in leadership, which I deeply respect. Omni Bridgeway is delighted to welcome Job van Ballegoijen de Jong to the team.   Job is an Investment Manager based in Amsterdam, where he is responsible for origination across Omni Bridgeway’s investments in the EMEA region, most notably the enforcement of (sovereign) awards and judgments, international arbitration matters and our wider litigation funding efforts. Prior to joining, Job worked at the top-tier firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in Amsterdam, first as a senior associate, and then as Head of International Relations. We asked Job a few simple questions to get to know him a little better: Q: Why did you decide to move from private practice into the world of funding? After 11 years at my old firm, I decided it was time for something new, but not just anything. After being connected with Omni Bridgeway, I felt my prior experiences as a lawyer and as head of international relations really came together: having the legal way of thinking and assessing whether a claim is viable, and knowing the law firms throughout EMEA whose clients may benefit from funding. By talking to Omni’s Investment Managers, I became even more excited, and that hasn’t stopped since I joined. Q: What was the highlight of your time working at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in Amsterdam? Can I give two? One was a week-long hearing in London where we managed to break down the opposing party’s expert until he acknowledged everything we said was true and his own client’s statements were false. And the other was when I was in international relations and had to organise my firm’s presence at the IBA conference in Paris. 75 bilateral meetings, dinners, lunches, receptions, all meticulously prepared, and apart from one meeting in which one of my partners thought our counterparts belonged to that firm’s biggest rival, everything went smoothly. Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever gotten at work? Own your mistakes and learn from them. Q: What celebrity do most people say you look like? I wish people said I look like a celebrity! Though two girls in a bar in New York once said I look like Bradley Cooper, which I consider a compliment. Q: What movie do you wish you could watch again for the first time? Love Actually. Although re-watching it and knowing it by heart is also great fun. Q: What is your go-to karaoke anthem? A good karaoke song in my view an up-tempo banger (or an iconic ballad), so I have to pick Shake It Off, by Taylor Swift Q: What did you want to be when you grew up? My dad was a parfumier, and I am also gifted with a big nose, so I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Q:  You can visit any fictional time or place. Which would you pick? Hogwarts. No doubt about it.
