> Managing a family of 5 children  > Leading Al Jaber group with over 55,000 employees > Making $9 billion in assets and $2.8 billion in revenue    Meet Fatima Al-Jaber, COO of the $9 billion Al-Jaber Group and a mother of five.    She was born into a business family but forged her own path by working in the government sector. Despite the initial challenges of balancing her career and family responsibilities, she joined Al Jaber Group and other organisations, such as the Abu Dhabi Business Women's Council, as chairperson and was elected as the first Emirati woman to the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce.    Reading her story made me realise these 4 key lessons from her:    1) Continuous learning and growth:  Her decision to gain experience in the government sector even after having a family business and a family to manage highlights the importance of continuous learning and personal growth.   2) Balancing priorities:  Fatima's ability to juggle her responsibilities as a mother of five and a successful business leader serves as a testament to the significance of prioritising and striking a balance between personal and professional commitments. 3) Redefining societal norms:  After joining businesses and various organisations, Fatima challenged traditional gender roles and societal expectations. Her story encourages women to redefine societal norms and pursue their ambitions without compromising their personal identities. 4) Strategic networking: Fatima's involvement in organisations demonstrates the importance of strategic networking and building influential connections to drive change and create opportunities. As a woman entrepreneur living in Dubai, I'm incredibly proud and grateful to be part of a nation that champions Women's Empowerment. The UAE has created a safe, secure, and convenient environment for women to thrive, both personally and professionally. Initiatives like the "WAM Woman Against Molestation" campaign provide women with a safe space to report harassment and receive support. 2. ✨ Strong Legal Framework The UAE has robust legal frameworks in place to protect women's rights and ensure their safety, including laws against domestic violence, discrimination, and sexual harassment. 3. ✨ Smart Cities Dubai's smart city infrastructure makes daily life convenient for women. 4. ✨ Women-Friendly Facilities Public spaces, shopping malls, and workplaces in the UAE are designed with women's comfort and safety in mind, providing facilities like designated parking, nursing rooms, and prayer areas. The best part? There are so many Government Initiatives for Women-Owned Businesses ▶ General Women's Union is headed by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak to form a national mechanism for empowering women and female entrepreneurs in the UAE ▶ Dubai Business Women Council (DBWC) focuses on the personal and professional development of businesswomen and female entrepreneurs in the UAE ▶ Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development launched the SWAN programme to empower female Emirati-led home businesses ▶ Dubai SME and Womena has launched a new Entrepreneur Program for Emirati Women Most importantly, UAE observes Emirati Women's Day on the 28th of August, every year, to recognize and celebrate the achievements and esteemed status of Emirati women in the nation's comprehensive development journey. I had the opportunity to attend the "Empowering Diversity: Women Leading the Way in Middle Eastern Maritime" event today arranged by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), your dedication to uniting the maritime industry around such critical issues is truly inspiring. Thank you for hosting this meaningful event! Today’s discussions were enlightening. Eng. Khalid Al Hammad, President of Bahri Ship Management, reminded us that this focus on diversity is a movement, not just a trend. He spoke passionately about how long-standing barriers—like the belief that women can’t handle long hours, can’t be away from home, or shun away from taking additional responsibility are being overcome. While progress is happening gradually, Mr. Khalid emphasized the importance of patience as more opportunities for education and training help pave the way. During the panel discussion, Fatma Al Khumiri, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Drydocks World, shared advice that struck a chord with me personally: "Be aware of your influence and, above all, be kind to yourself." Hanna from Bahri shared a powerful insight: the biggest barrier women often face is themselves. She highlighted how we sometimes limit ourselves and that challenging our internal beliefs is key to real change. Hanna also spoke about finding a balance that works for each of us—as this is different for everyone, we (women and men :)) need to strike the right balance between family, health, work, and personal time. Nicolai, CEO of Adani Port, brought a critical perspective on diversity, emphasizing that it must be anchored at the right level to succeed. He encouraged leaders to take these important conversations into the boardroom to ensure long-term impact. It was inspiring to see the women cadets from Sharjah Maritime Academy representing true change in a tangible sense, embodying the shift toward a more inclusive industry. One of the key takeaways that left a lasting impression on me was the importance of investing in diversity for the right reasons. Saudi Arabia’s strides in female workforce participation are transforming the tourism and hospitality sectors. The Kingdom has surpassed its Saudi Vision 2030 goal of 30% female participation in the labor market, now aiming for 40%. Partner Anne-Laure Malauzat highlighted the significant contributions of female leaders and emphasized the massive presence of women across various roles, from architects and passport control officers to hospitality leaders and tourist guides. She noted that these leaders are crucial in enhancing consumer understanding and driving sector transformation, supporting the Vision 2030 agenda on multiple fronts.
