How can we support communities in increasing their ability to welcome and absorb former members of armed forces and groups? 📗 GCERF, UNDP , Folke Bernadotte Academy and Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre have joined forces to develop a comprehensive Guidance Note on Supporting Community-Based Reintegration of Former Members of Armed Forces and Groups. This Guidance Note offers a detailed roadmap for designing, negotiating, and managing reintegration support processes. By focusing on community-based reintegration (CBR), it emphasises the importance of empowering communities to absorb women, men, girls, and boys exiting armed forces and groups—socially and economically. Despite the increase in military coups and unconstitutional changes of government, #Democracy remains very popular in Africa. The idea that citizens can choose their own leaders is one that African citizens embrace positively. On March 24, eyes will be on #Senegal, as citizens will head to the polls to choose a new president after a political and constitutional crisis that had many twists and turns. #ICYMI: Resharing a public discussion that the Wilson Center Africa Program co-hosted on March 11 with UNDP Africa to discuss forward-looking perspectives to prevent further unconstitutional changes of government and explore opportunities for transformative #political transition and sustained constitutional order in countries affected by #coups. The recent military coups and unconstitutional changes of government represent a need for an introspection by the global community of democracy strengthening organizations. Thanks to our stellar panel Jide Martyns Okeke, PhD (Coordinator, Regional Program for Africa, UNDP Africa), Kholood Khair (founder and director, Confluence Advisory), and Joe Siegle (Director of Research, Africa Center for Strategic Studies) for an informative discussion. “The issue of the release and reintegration of children should be included in all stages of any peace process; where children have participated in armed conflict, peace agreements and related documents should acknowledge this fact. Peace agreements should include specific provision for the needs of children, including the particular needs of girls and any children they have or will have as a result of their association with an armed force or armed group.” ~Paris Principles #ChildrenNotSoldiers #ChildProtection #DDR #ProtectionofCivilians #Peacebuilding #ConflictResolution

📢New Briefing from #ChildGuardians & #TheWhiteHelmets on #WorldChildrensDay In the comments, you'll find the link to the report highlighting the alarming increase in #AttacksOnSchools in NW Syria between 2023 & 2024.The report emphasises the deliberate nature of these attacks, which targeted civilian infrastructure without clear military objectives, reflecting an assault on hope and the future. We call on the international community to activate accountability mechanisms for these attacks and to support local actors in documenting violations. Focus should be placed on children's rights violations in the upcoming mandate of the International Commission of Inquiry and the development of a national Safe Schools Declaration for Syria. #AttacksOnEducation #StopTheAttacks #EducationIsNotATarget #StandWithChildRights The White Helmets

On 31 October 2000, the United Nations #SecurityCouncil adopted resolution 1325 recognizing for the first time the vital role of women in conflict resolution and the need for increased women’s participation in peace-making and decision-making at all levels in peace processes. Despite significant progress, women continue to be underrepresented in peace processes and decision-making roles and are often excluded from many security sector institutions. Follow-along this month as we break barriers and honour women #ServingForEquality and fighting for women's participation in national security and defense sectors: https://lnkd.in/g2kwct72 #WomenPeaceSecurity United Nations Peacekeeping

In both examples, the struggles for rights resulted in significant suffering, but the responsibility for that suffering lies with those who perpetuated injustice and oppression. It is essential to recognize that while struggles for rights may involve hardship, the focus should be on the systemic issues and actors that create and sustain that suffering. This perspective emphasizes the importance of accountability for those who inflict suffering rather than condemning the sufferers themselves. In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is vital to understand that the suffering of the Palestinian people is not solely a result of Hamas's actions but also a consequence of broader systemic issues, including military operations, blockades, and policies that contribute to the humanitarian crisis.
