During his address, Mr Rajeev Kumar Mital, Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga, underscored how water quality concerns have been at the core of the Namami Gange initiative. He highlighted the significance of a robust online monitoring mechanism to maintain the health of the river Ganga and ensure the success of water quality management efforts. One key development is PRAYAG (Platform for Real-time Analysis of Yamuna And Ganga), which collects and analyses data from sewage treatment plants (STPs) to enable timely and effective feedback for collaborative action among operators and stakeholders. Mr Mital also emphasised the need for satellite-based water quality monitoring systems, envisioning these technologies as the next step in improving oversight and safeguarding our precious water resources. Through various initiatives undertaken, ecosystem restoration is being successfully achieved indicated by, for example, an increase in the number of Dolphins and Turtles in certain stretches of the river. WATER PROJECT: The extension and upgrade project of the Outapi Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has started today. According to the chief executive officer of Namwater, Abraham Nehemia, the N$141.8 million project aims to increase both the capacity and the quality of water provided to residents of Outapi. The minister of agriculture, water and land reform, Calle Schlettwein explained that the project will increase water supply capacity, improve water quality, and support regional growth as well as development. “In the coming months, we will witness the transformation of this vision into reality,” said the governor of the Omusati region Erginus Endjala at the launch. Testing water quality in Devchuli, Nepal 🚰 🌱 Access to clean drinking water is crucial for our health and well-being. 🔬 There is a laboratory in the project area that is responsible for any water quality testing. Project supports the laboratory by providing water safety plan training to make sure the staff is well educated. 🧪 In the lab they are testing: • Daily: Turbidity, PH, taste and odor, color, and residual chlorine • Monthly: EC, ammonia, chloride, nitrate, total hardness, calcium, E. Coli, and total coliform. • Quarterly: TDS • Yearly: Iron, magnese, sulphate, arsenic, cadmium, copper, fluoride, cyanide, lead, chromium, zinc, mercury, aluminium The lab is municipal, but operated by the largest UC in town in the municipality office compound. It's crucial we discuss the significant, yet underutilised, potential of Māori freshwater models in shaping our regulatory frameworks. The latest findings from the PCE's review highlight a gap that shouldn’t exist: Māori knowledge systems, rich in understanding and managing our water resources, remain largely sidelined in regulatory contexts. Why is this gap problematic? Our councils often voice a commitment to integrating Māori perspectives and tools, yet they struggle with the practicalities of aligning these with existing regulatory frameworks. This isn't just a missed bureaucratic checkbox; it's a missed opportunity to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of water management across New Zealand. Setting up a group of experts, as recommended, to bridge mātauranga Māori with scientific models is a step in the right direction. However, it’s more than just about collaboration. It’s about valuing and integrating Indigenous wisdom that has been fine-tuning its approach to natural resource management long before modern regulations were conceived. Actively engaging with mana whenua isn't just a regulatory obligation—it's a chance to make our environmental stewardship more inclusive and informed. We must move past mere acknowledgments and towards actionable, respectful integration of these models. This will strengthen our environmental policies and affirm the significance of Māori contributions to New Zealand’s environmental governance. Let's stay within a resource that could guide us towards more resilient and adaptive water management practices. Let's integrate, respect, and learn from mātauranga Māori, making it a central part of protecting and managing our freshwater resources.
