To kick off the #16DaysofActivism, our gender specialist Marina Berbiec spoke with the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) on their #GirlsEducation podcast about gender-based violence risk mitigation in Education in Emergencies coordination and response. The episode covers case studies from South Sudan, Pakistan and Nigeria where practitioners give examples of their work to create safer education systems for women and girls. 🎧Listen to the episode here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gW9NYMk8

In #ethiopia humanitarian funding for #education has decreased for the first time, yet between May 2023 and May 2024 the number of children out of school due to conflict, flooding and drought has increased by 150%. This morning roundtable organized by the Global Education Cluster was not only a wake-up call for the donor community but for all of us: what are we doing for the children of Ethiopia? And what can we do more? Betelihem Seleshi our Safeguarding, Gender and Social Inclusion Officer showed how Link Education International #safeguarding mechanisms at school level have been able to prevent and protect children, particularly girls, from sexual exploitation and abuse, evidencing once again how #educationinemergency is life saving and life-sustaining

In Nigeria, 30% of individuals aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence, and societal norms continue to fuel cycles of harm. Today, the fight against GBV is no longer a solitary effort. Men and women are standing together, united in advocacy and action. From fathers and mothers to brothers, sisters, neighbors, and friends, people are breaking the silence, challenging harmful norms, and championing equality for all. At SCIDaR, we are proud to support this collective movement. The change we seek isn’t a ripple—it’s a wave. A wave that promises safety, value, and opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender. When we rise together, no cycle of violence can withstand our collective strength. Let’s keep building the world we deserve—one where every voice matters. #EndGBV #UnifiedForChange #SCIDaRImpact Anglophone West Africa Social Norms & Agency Learning Collaborative

Gender Based Violence is unfortunately very rampant of late considering the recent statistics. These incidents are hidden in plain sight and happening right in front of us. We should be vigilant, speak out and create a safe environment where such can be reported and dealt with. Thank you to IOM, UNHCR, UNFPA and UNICEF for the opportunity to train on: 1. Root causes of GBV 2. Guiding principles 3. Dos and Don'ts 4.PFA 5. Interactive Case studies

From 25 November to 10 December, we are marking the #16Days of activism—a global call to action to put an end to gender-based violence. 🌍 70% of women experience gender-based violence in humanitarian contexts. Women and girls #uprooted by conflicts, instability and crises are more vulnerable to gender-based violence. At UNFPA, we are strengthening capacities for evaluations in humanitarian settings, enabling humanitarian response to be guided by evaluation evidence. Our 📙 Guidance on humanitarian evaluations: Compendium to the #EvaluationHandbook provides practical guidance for planning, managing and actively participating in evaluations of UNFPA humanitarian action. In 2021, we collaborated with Search for Common Ground and Lebanese feminist NGO ABAAD on the “Toward a Gender-Equitable Society” initiative, funded by UK Aid. Catalystas oversaw the implementation and baseline reporting for this critical study, which examined the perceptions and understanding of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) across Lebanese media and the general population. The findings helped shape a 24-month program to deliver essential support and preventive services to the Lebanese public. Today, as violence and displacement intensify due to the ongoing conflict, women in Lebanon face compounded threats of harm and vulnerability. We cannot ignore the urgent need to stop such conflicts to protect and empower women, so they can live in safety and dignity. Ending violence requires addressing not only immediate security but also deep-rooted systemic inequities. Our work will continue until women everywhere can live without fear. #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #TowardGenderEquity #CatalystasConsulting #SGBV #Lebanon #Abaad #SearchForCommonGround #GenderEquity #StopConflict

Check out my latest article for @ahramonline on the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, which is reaching catastrophic levels as the ongoing conflict displaces over 1 million people. Families are left alone on the streets, especially in #Baalbek_Hermel, where children & women suffer the most. UNICEF reports that approximately 54% of children in Nigeria are 'multidimensionally poor,' facing at least three deprivations in areas such as nutrition, healthcare, and education. Additionally, over 10.5 million Nigerian children are out of school. Failure to address digital inequalities can exacerbate existing divides, especially for vulnerable groups. Poverty impacts children's long-term well-being, leading to unskilled, unhealthy, and uneducated youth. To combat this, we connect children, women, and youth to training opportunities and resources, promoting digital inclusion, safety, and rights, and enhancing career outcomes, health, and well-being. We focus on digital safety and reducing inequalities, especially for women and girls. . . . . . . . . #aspirehubng #aspirehubnaija #ngo #sdgs #digitalskills #empowermentskills #socialskills #youthempowerment #safetycourses #practicalskills #ngoinnigeria #youthempowermentinnigeria

On #AfricasWomensDay, we would like to celebrate #genderequality. Only if that were the case. Here are some highlights from the Continent: 4 in every 10 adults believe that men should get priority in #employment. Men still hold three times as many parliamentary seats in #Africa as women. No wonder, Senegal dropped the term ‘women’ and ‘protection’ from the Ministry of women and child protection. Or that lawmakers in the Gambia flirted with the idea of lifting the ban on FGM. Talk about the digital divide in Africa? Men persistently have higher access at 52% and women lagging behind at 43%. Women continue to be disproportionately affected by #climatechange risks and conflicts. More than 1,00,000 women suffered sexual violence during the Tigray conflict. Add to that, the rising instances of femicide in countries like Somalia and Kenya. It is rather ironical how I am calling these highlights; these are more like ‘lowlights.’ 95 years – that’s how long it will take to close the gender gap in Africa. We have a long way to go!
