🌟 Proud to Launch the Feminist Youth Coalition for Gender-Transformative Education in Nigeria 🇳🇬 On November 18, 2024, I had the privilege of coordinating the official launch of the Feminist Youth Coalition for Gender-Transformative Education in Abuja, under UN Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI) and the Gender at the Centre Initiative. This milestone brought together 30 young feminists from across Nigeria, resulting in: ✅ A bold action plan to tackle gender inequalities in education. ✅ A robust governance structure for the coalition. ✅ Renewed solidarity to challenge harmful social norms. This manifests in various forms including domestic violence, rape, and female genital mutilation. ·        Cultural norms often perpetuate GBV, with patriarchal structures reinforcing unequal power dynamics between men and women. ·        GBV affects people of all ages, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Taliban's rule over the past three years has indeed been devastating for Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls. The denial of education to females at all levels has created a generational gap in knowledge and skills that will have long-lasting consequences. The absence of new high school graduates, medical professionals, and other educated individuals threatens the country's future development and healthcare system. The confinement of women to their homes and the stripping away of their rights represent a severe human rights violation and a significant step backwards for gender equality. This not only affects women individually but also impacts families, communities, and the entire nation's social and economic fabric. The international community must continue to pressure the Taliban regime to restore women's rights and access to education. Supporting underground education initiatives, advocating for change, and providing humanitarian aid are crucial steps. Tackling Gender and Inclusive Development Challenges in South Africa South Africa faces significant gender and inclusive development challenges. Here are some of the most pressing issues: 1. Gender-Based Violence (GBV): High rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and femicide, with systemic barriers in law enforcement and justice. 2. Economic Inequality: Women, especially African women, face economic disparities with higher unemployment and lower wages. 3. Access to Education: Gender disparities in education, particularly in higher education and STEM fields, with additional barriers in rural areas. 4. Health Disparities: High rates of HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality, and limited access to reproductive health services for women. 5. Political Representation and Leadership: Underrepresentation of women in leadership roles despite progress in political representation. 6. Cultural and Social Norms: Patriarchal attitudes and harmful practices like child marriage. 7. LGBTQ+ Rights: Discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community, despite progressive laws. 8. Land and Property Rights: Discrimination in accessing land and property rights, impacting women's economic independence. 9. The UK's 2024 International Project Award has been given to the Girls' Education South Sudan (GESS) program for its impact on improving educational access for girls. Girls are 50 percent of total school enrollment in 2022 compared to 45.4 percent in 2020, and the program has seen great successes. GESS has supported over one million girls through cash transfers, enabling them to purchase educational materials and menstrual hygiene supplies. The initiative has helped increase total student enrollment to 2,021,553, with girls accounting for 1,011,607 enrolled students. The program addresses critical barriers to girls' education through community mobilization radio programs focusing on learning techniques, disability inclusion, and menstrual health. It also provides school grants for infrastructure improvements and learning materials. The recognition comes as South Sudan works through immense educational challenges, with more than 70 percent of children not going to school because of war, displacement, and cultural practices. Let's talk about Haiti, where violence and chaos permeates all aspects of life. Killings, sexual assaults, kidnappings, torture, and the fear of such barbaric acts as well as poverty, lack of food and basic services, are part of daily life. The latest gender analysis of #Haiti "Addressing Haitian women's particular needs through their leadership role" by UN Women, and civil society networks the Youth Development Initiative (IDEJEN) and the Network for Gender Equality in Humanitarian Action (REGAH) amplifies the need for urgent action. The assessment found an extremely untenable situation exacerbated for women and girls. While sexual violence has been used as a strategy of armed gang violence against women and girls, the report also highlighted that women and girls were also prone to sexual exploitation and abuse, with those in displacement sites being asked for sexual favours in exchange for assistance and economic opportunities. The assessment calls for more protection of women and girls from all forms of violence including in displacement camps; more resources for food as well as hygiene and sanitation; and more data collection initiatives by humanitarian actors.
