Paul Graham, who started the startup incubator Y Combinator, has a new essay on the subject of "Founder Mode," examining a question raised by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. Graham's essay is here, and the New York Times has a short piece on it. https://lnkd.in/dmkRhbNW https://lnkd.in/dmaSbvJW Graham seems to define founder's mode as a set of management tactics that would be regarded as eccentric, "micro-managey" and probably non-productive by non-founder managers who are brought in to exercise typical business school processes. Importing these tested solutions then induces failure in a company that is succeeding because it has broken the typical mode and found a novel operations path to success. The founder's mode is a type of disruptive olive oil that operates smoothly, and bringing in typical biz schoolers isn't catalytic, like adding vinegar. For a company running on olive oil, it's damaging, like adding too much oxygen and light. One thing business schoolers do study quite a lot is "founder's dilemma," which is what happens when the founder needs to retire or wants to sell, and how a new management team must find a scalable, successful way forward without that connective, eccentric glue. It's finding a way to systematize the values and unique qualities of that particular company. Tim Cook is a different kind of chef than Steve Jobs, but it doesn't appear that the company has suffered because it's operating on a different management path. There are more than two ways to run a successful company than "founder's mode" and 'manager's mode." Maybe Cook found a recipe with new vinegars and special sauces that riff on the original culture without making a hash of it.

Now she feels freaking confident about the new direction that is coming to form because we are putting together all pieces in a more expansive and authentic way. And with clear impact to the contribution she wanted to bring into the world from day 1 when she started about a decade ago. Without inventing something new or adding a ton of things.
