On this World Environment Day (WED) we are reminded of Pope Francis’ words when he addressed participants at a Vatican summit on climate crisis held in April. In his address, the Pope lamented the worsening data regarding climate change, calling for urgent action “to protect people and nature.” “The wealthier nations, around 1 billion people, produce more than half the heat trapping pollutants,” said the Pope. “On the contrary, the 3 billion poorer people contribute less than 10%, yet they suffer 75% of the resulting damage.” “We find ourselves faced with systemic challenges that are distinct yet interconnected: climate change, the loss of biodiversity, environmental decay, global disparities, lack of food security and threats to the dignity of the peoples affected by them,” he said. Each of these issues, added the Pope, must be addressed urgently and collectively in order to safeguard the world’s poor, especially women and children, who bear a disproportionate burden. On this WED let’s do something beneficial for the Earth. Whether it be alone or with friends, or as part of your school community, the important thing is to take action to make our planet a better place. Climate change affects more than just the planet; it affects people, too. 🌏 The most vulnerable communities around the world are bearing the brunt of climate change's devastating impacts despite contributing the least to the problem. Millions are joining the climate justice movement to protect these communities most impacted by climate change, hold those accountable for their actions, and ensure fair and achievable solutions. Together, we can work to create a more equitable and sustainable future. 🟢 #WorldEnvironmentDay | The climate crisis that our planet is going through and its consequences are an undeniable reality that disproportionately affects the most vulnerable communities on the planet. The floods in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), the forest fires in Corrientes (Argentina) and the intensification of extreme weather events in the Central American Dry Corridor (which runs through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala) are clear examples of how climate change challenges us. 🌊🌎🔥 In this context, there are thousands of activists around the world who day by day are working to find solutions and answers to this great crisis. That is why, today to celebrate World Environment Day, we bring the voice of Francisco Vera, environmental activist and founder of Guardianes por la Vida, who tells us about the role of children in the fight for a cleaner and more just world.

It has become increasingly urgent for us to take action against the devastating effects of climate change, as the consequences are now more evident than ever. The submersion of islands like Kale in the Solomon Islands is a stark reminder of the rapid environmental changes caused by rising sea levels, land erosion, and extreme weather patterns. These events destroy ecosystems and displace entire communities, erasing their homes, cultures, and ways of life. The Solomon Islands consist of 21 major islands and over 900 smaller ones. Kale Island became one of the first to submerge due to climate change. After 10 years, it has become just another overlooked record we see annually. This must stop. Sustainable practices, reduced carbon emissions, and strong environmental policies are no longer optional but essential. The time to act is now.
