New research : Protecting Procedrual Rights of Children in the Digital Age We’re thrilled to have kicked off the PRO-Child (Protecting Procedural Rights of Children in the Digital Age) project! PRO-Child is a collaborative effort across Ireland, Romania, Spain, and Ukraine to protect children’s rights in justice systems that are increasingly using digital solutions. Our goal is to address the unique challenges children face in digital justice environments and ensure their right to a fair trial is protected. Throughout the project, we’ll work to: - Raise awareness of the impact of digital justice on children’s procedural rights - Create accessible resources for children, with their input, to help them better understand their rights - Advocate for critical legal and policy changes to safeguard these rights at the EU and national levels Stay tuned for more information about the project on https://lnkd.in/gzNfR7d Terre des hommes Penal Reform International Fundación Tierra de hombres Terre des hommes - Hungary Terre des hommes Foundation - Romania

The first research talk of this semester’s Research in Praxis Discussion Series (RiPDS) will be held Wednesday, February 28 at 6:30pm ET via Zoom. We are pleased to be able to hear from new GSLIS faculty member Dr. Nerve Macaspac, who will be discussing his research on "Digital Civic Spaces." Please see the flyer below/attached for more information and please be sure to register! https://bit.ly/RiPDSsp24 Please share widely, and we look forward to seeing you all there! --- Nerve Macaspac (he/him) is a political geographer and cartographer. His research examines community-led spaces of peace amid active violent conflict. He is an Asst. Professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College and a Doctoral Faculty at the Earth and Environmental Sciences Program at the Graduate Center. Digital Civic Spaces In the Philippines, human rights defenders face threats and harassment on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) for standing up for human rights and democratic reforms. They face online threats due to their long-standing work against extrajudicial killings, social injustice, and many forms of societal violence. From state counterinsurgency to the government’s "drug war", human rights defenders have documented thousands of cases of extrajudicial executions, illegal detention, gender-based violence, and torture. Many of the perpetrators of these atrocities remain unknown and maintain impunity. Meanwhile, the Duterte government has filed trumped-up charges repeatedly against human rights defenders for alleged “terrorist activities,” which human rights experts refer to as “red-tagging.” Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, reports that red-tagging in the Philippines results in extrajudicial killings and poses a dangerous threat to civil society and freedom of expression. This research asks: How do human rights defenders create digital spaces of peace and protect themselves from online violence? At stake is a better understanding of the challenges and prospects of digital civic spaces in the promotion of human rights and peace. #QCGSLIS #GSLISFaculty #ResearchinPraxisDiscussionSeries #RiPDS #NerveMacaspac #DigitalCivicSpaces https://lnkd.in/gd8XtXnN

📜 How was the EU’s #FundamentalRights Charter applied across the different EU Member States in 2023? ⚖️ National courts continue to use the Charter but it is underused in national and local policies. FRA calls on countries to make greater use of national Charter focal points and to give them adequate resources. It also suggests countries avail of EU funding for Charter-related training to enhance awareness of the Charter among public officials in national, regional and local authorities. 🔎 For more, see the #EURightsAgency’s Fundamental Rights Report 2024: europa.eu/!TXfCDY

‼️ Information The Human Rights Defender made a decision about the existence of violation of the rights of a group of residents of Lvovyan street, to which the press secretary of the mayor of Yerevan responded on social networks, expressing assessments about the scope of the Defender's mandate. We consider it necessary to emphasize that the Human Rights Defender of Armenia has a broad constitutional mandate to assess the circumstances of any violation of rights or its absence thereof, if it concerns possible violations of rights by state and local self-government bodies and their officials. Moreover, the mandate and principles of operation of the Defender’s Office, the criteria for respecting the latter's independence and mandate by state and local self-government bodies are defined in a number of international documents. You can learn about some of them in the text of the statement published by the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions in support of the Human Rights Defender's Office of Armenia (https://lnkd.in/ePaDNnNM). Moreover, these principles have such an important role in a democratic state that the Criminal Code of Armenia establishes responsibility for obstructing the exercise of the Human Rights Defender's powers in any way, including interfering with her activities in any manner. Therefore, any attempt to assess the scope of competence of the Human Rights Defender in a manner contrary to the above-mentioned standards, to interfere with her activities and to limit her independence should be excluded. Otherwise, violations of international standards should be made a subject of discussion. It is of utmost importance to highlight that in accordance with the law, the state or local self-government body, its official or organization, which received the decision of the Defender on the violation of human rights or freedoms, are obliged to inform the Defender in writing form about the measures taken as soon as possible, but not later than thirty days after receiving it.
