🌍 Excited to have been part of the Urban-Rural Linkages and Land Action Event at #UNCCD #COP16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where I joined a distinguished panel of experts Remy Sietchiping Salman Aldalbahi @camilo romero Firdaous Oussidhoum Thomas Forster @abdul husaini Willem Ferwerda Florence Egal to discuss Urban Rural Linkages and Land and innovative solutions for sustainable development. This event emphasized the importance of territorial governance, decentralized planning, and landscape partnerships to enhance urban-rural linkages and accelerate land restoration efforts. It was inspiring to see global and regional stakeholders unite for a shared vision of sustainable land management. During the session, I shared insights on the role of circular urban and rural economies in addressing water scarcity, land degradation, and climate resilience in water-scarce environments. Key points included: ✔️ Capturing and recycling organic waste to reduce urban waste streams. ✔️ Using treated wastewater for sustainable agriculture and sludge to rehabilitate degraded lands. ✔️ Converting landscape and food waste into valuable resources to enhance rural livelihoods. With over 80% urbanization in the Middle East, cities have immense potential as transformation agents, while leveraging tribal social systems can strengthen collaboration across urban and rural areas. Let’s continue the dialogue and take these actionable solutions forward! For more on the event and to engage with next steps, feel free to connect. 🌱 #UNCCD #LandRestoration #UrbanRuralLinkages #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction

🌍 Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and the SDGs: What Models Lead to Sustainable Development? 🔗 Version française: https://lnkd.in/eTJEqs-f Did you know that over 80% of development projects overlook environmental impacts, leading to harmful effects on ecosystems and communities? By incorporating environmental, social, and economic dimensions early in policy planning, we can transform development strategies. SEA is crucial in evaluating the impacts of policies, plans, and programs (PPPs), helping to achieve long-term sustainability. 💡 The Role of SEA: SEA goes beyond individual projects by influencing decision-making at a strategic level. It was introduced in the 1980s to address the limitations of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), ensuring environmental factors are integrated throughout the planning cycle. 📊 Key Models of SEA: EIA-Based SEA: Clear and legally compliant, but with limited strategic scope. Example: The Banjul Accord in West Africa ensures environmental compliance in airport infrastructure (UEMOA, 2021). Strategic Thinking-Based SEA: Collaborative and proactive, but complex in implementation. Example: Canada’s ST4S model for integrated resource management (Government of Canada, 2019). 🌱 SEA’s Contribution to the SDGs: SEA supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially: SDG 13 (Climate Action) 🌡️ SDG 15 (Life on Land) 🌳 SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities) 🏙️ By fostering climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and sustainable urban development, SEA plays a critical role in building a sustainable future. 🤝 Join the Conversation: Which SEA model is best suited for achieving sustainability in your field? What challenges or successes have you experienced in applying SEA? Let’s discuss how we can shape policies to drive environmental and social impact! 📄 Interested in diving deeper? Check out my attached presentation for a detailed look into SEA models and their alignment with the SDGs. 🔎 Looking for experienced professionals in the E&S or sustainability fields? I recently had the privilege of participating in the workshop titled "Mastering SDGs," organized by Skillistan and the International Research Alliance for Sustainable Development on 6th July 2024. It was an incredible experience, featuring insightful sessions from exceptional facilitators Muhammad Ali Zafar, Hira Khalil, Asim Perwaiz, Sakina Marium, and our esteemed guest speaker Sher Shah Khan This workshop has been a fantastic opportunity to deepen my understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are pivotal to the project, "The Transformation of the Construction Sector in Pakistan; a Pathway towards Clean, Green, and Sustainable Buildings." Here are the key SDGs: SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy This goal emphasizes the importance of ensuring access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy sources. In the workshop, we explored strategies to enhance energy efficiency and support the transition to renewable energy sources, crucial for sustainable development. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities focuses on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. We discussed innovative approaches to urban planning and development, aimed at improving living conditions and reducing the environmental SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production highlights the need for sustainable consumption and production patterns. The workshop shed light on practices that minimize waste and promote the efficient use of resources, vital for reducing our ecological footprint. SDG 13: Climate Action calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. We examined strategies for mitigating climate change effects and enhancing resilience, crucial for safeguarding our planet's future. A huge thank you to the facilitators and guest speakers for their invaluable insights and for driving the conversation on these critical goals. Looking forward to applying these learnings in our efforts towards a more sustainable future! #SDGs #Sustainable Development #CleanEnergy #SustainableCities #ResponsibleConsumption #ClimateAction #Skillistan #IRASD #Sustainability

In the Arab region, sustainability has become more than just a buzzword; it's a pressing necessity for future development. However, a critical gap exists between the research being conducted and its practical implementation. While universities and research centers across the region produce innovative studies on renewable energy, water conservation, and waste management, the findings often fail to reach policymakers and industry leaders who can drive change. The challenge lies not in the lack of knowledge, but in the disconnect between research and real-world application. Collaboration between academic institutions, government bodies, and private enterprises is essential to bridge this gap. By promoting partnerships and encouraging knowledge exchange, we can ensure that the research doesn’t remain on paper, but instead transforms into practical solutions. Arab nations, with their unique environmental challenges such as water scarcity and extreme temperatures, are in dire need of innovative, localized approaches to sustainability. The region’s academic institutions are producing research that could lead the way if only the right frameworks for collaboration and policy integration are established. Now is the time for leaders in the Arab world to recognize the power of research-driven sustainability. Together, we can turn insights into action and pave the way for a greener, more resilient future. #SustainabilityResearch #ArabRegion #GreenFuture
