Two weeks ago, we held a webinar on the key developments in policy and investments for Carbon capture and storage across Europe. Our panelists, Andreas Moeller from Wintershall Dea, Cristel Lambton from Equinor, Giacomo Matarazzo from Teréga and Colin McGill, gave some very interesting and valuable insights into some of the challenges faced across the value chain. The following points were raised in the different presentations and following discussion: 👍 There is a growing policy consensus internationally that deploying CCS is essential to reach climate targets 📈 Even though CCS is not a novel technology, large scale deployment to help with environmental objectives is still at an early stage – but some projects are already operational and many others are in planning. In particular, the EU has so far awarded PCI or PMI status to 14 CCS projects across Europe ❗ But the value chain from capture to storage is complex, and involves different risks that may call for policy interventions 🌍 Support mechanisms are already in place for e.g. in the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the UK... and are being developed or implemented in France, Germany. But the design of intervention varies a lot across countries, especially on the transport and storage infrastructure aspects of the value chain ❓ There are likely to be key trade-offs between the complexity of the intervention versus the speed at which the sector needs to develop. We look forward to continuing working on the topic and seeing how the value chain develops in the coming years! 📽 You can use the link below to watch the recording. https://lnkd.in/esTTgrzN Johanna Reichenbach, Nick Lynd, Claire Thornhill, Catherine Galano (L’Hostis)
