🆕 The #BucharestManifesto has just been released! It urges both European & national political leaders, & all stakeholders to prioritise Quality as the cornerstone of cultural #heritage policy & practice. By committing to these principles, we can ensure that cultural heritage remains authentic and resilient, preserving its value for society throughout Europe. This collective call to action is the key outcome of the European Heritage #PolicyAgora, which was held on 8 October in #Bucharest, in the framework of the #EuropeanHeritageSummit 2024. 🏛️ ✅The #BucharestManifesto calls on European and national political leaders, as well as all stakeholders, to prioritize QUALITY as the foundation of cultural #heritage policy and practice. In light of Bulgaria's challenges with low-quality restorations in architecture and archaeology, the manifesto resonates even more deeply. Prioritizing quality is not just an ideal— it’s a necessity to prevent further harm to our shared heritage. How many irreplaceable treasures must be lost before we demand a new standard? Isn't it time to move beyond quick fixes and invest in preserving the authenticity of our past for future generations?

🌍 Localization of SDGs: Bridging Global Goals with Cultural Wisdom 🌿 The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action, but their true power lies in how they resonate with people on a personal level. By incorporating cultural and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), we can make these goals more relatable and actionable for communities worldwide. That’s why I believe Prof. Patrique deGraft-Yankson has done a fantastic job by matching each of the 17 goals to the Adinkra Symbol that best represents it – based on its rich history and meaning. This creative approach demonstrates how culture can transform ‘abstract’ concepts into familiar contexts, increasing awareness and engagement with the SDGs. Moreover, it challenges policymakers to reconsider how educational systems can honor Indigenous culture, empowering local communities to play an active role in achieving these global sustainability targets. 💡 What are your thoughts on using cultural symbols to promote sustainable development? 💬 How else can we make global initiatives more locally relevant? 🌏Let’s discuss and share ideas on how we can bridge the gap between global goals and local realities. P.S.: Adinkra are Ghanaian symbols that represent concepts, proverbs and aphorisms. Saturated with meaning, they serve as a concise way to convey deep truths. #SDGs #SustainableDevelopment #IndigenousWisdom #CulturalHeritage #Sustainability #GlobalGoals Image Credit: Prof. Patrique deGraft-Yankson, 2020.

Last week, CID Faculty Director Asim Ijaz Khwaja and Executive Director Fatema Z. Sumar were in Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹 for meetings with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). In a rich intellectual exchange with Princess Zahra Aga Khan and representatives of the Ismaili Imamat, the discussion focused on critical issues facing the international development sector including the true meaning and power of localization, challenges of migration, and bridging the gap between research and practice. The AKDN model has been a beacon of transformative change, revolutionizing the approach to community-driven sustainable development, particularly in South and Central Asia, East Africa, and the Middle East. There is much we can learn and scale up together as we reimagine the development sector and the path towards sustainable and resilient community development.
