Dear LinkedIn Community, As we strive to build a healthier and more prosperous Ethiopia, it's crucial to address the rising issue of drug abuse within our society.  The Reality: In recent years, Ethiopia has witnessed an alarming increase in drug abuse cases. According to the Ethiopian Food and Drug Administration (EFDA), there has been a 30% rise in substance abuse-related hospital admissions over the past five years. This growing trend is affecting our youth, families, and communities at large. The EFDA reports that 40% of high school students have tried at least one type of illicit drug.  Why Awareness Matters: Raising awareness is the first step in combating this pressing issue. With support from the USAID-funded Safe, Affordable, and Effective Medicines for Ukrainians (SAFEMed) activity, the Government of #Ukraine established the #AffordableMedicines Program (AMP) in 2017 to ensure that people suffering from #chronicillnesses had reliable, uninterrupted access to #essentialmedicines and treatments at affordable prices. Since then, the program has evolved and grown and now serves nearly five million people, providing substantial savings of up to 85% on medication costs. When the growing conflict with Russia began to threaten AMP’s sustainability, SAFEMed stepped up efforts to safeguard the program. Working with the government, SAFEMed provided legal advice to help modify AMP regulations to comply with martial law and make further adjustments to address urgent needs in areas affected by the conflict. Smoking significantly increases the risk of developing TB and worsens the outcomes for those already infected. This World #NoTobaccoDay, we highlight the challenges faced by TB patients in informal settlements. Community organisations struggle to locate people for TB care, and many patients default on their treatment due to a lack of essential resources. Empowering Stories: Useni's Journey from Adversity to Advocacy" Useni's narrative is a poignant reflection of the challenges faced by countless young individuals in Nigeria who dare to dream amidst adversity. His journey took an unexpected turn when he contracted measles during childhood, a turning point that left him visually impaired due to inadequate treatment. This sobering reality sheds light on a broader issue prevalent in many communities across Africa, where preventable conditions such as measles can lead to irreversible consequences, including blindness. In sharing Useni's story, we not only highlight the importance of accessible and quality healthcare but also underscore the urgent need to address traditional practices that may inadvertently contribute to such outcomes. Today, Pamumvuri PVO participated in a vital meeting aimed at reigniting the conversation on the Zimbabwe National Alcohol Policy formulation process. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, government representatives, civil society organizations, and community leaders. _Objectives:_ - Foster a collaborative discussion on the development and implementation of the Zimbabwe National Alcohol Policy - Gather valuable input, concerns, and recommendations from stakeholders to inform the policy development process - Establish a concrete action plan for reviving and finalizing the National Alcohol Policy The meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to share their perspectives and expertise, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive alcohol policy to address the country's alcohol-related challenges. Discussions highlighted the importance of a multi-sectoral approach, involving healthcare, education, law enforcement, and community engagement.
