South Africa to get its first fleet of electric buses

Simba Corporation Limited has marked a significant milestone in Kenya's journey towards sustainable mobility by delivering the first all-electric Mahindra XUV400 SUVs to Kenya Power. This delivery is part of an ambitious plan by the utility firm to electrify its fleet, aiming to expand to nine electric vehicles and 25 electric motorcycles by December 2024. This initiative underscores Kenya Power's commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. In April 2024, Kenya Power announced a Sh258 million investment towards e-mobility, reflecting its strategic focus on becoming carbon neutral. For nearly eight years, the company has been transitioning to electric material handling equipment, showcasing a longstanding commitment to green practices. David Mugambi, head of transport at Kenya Power, highlighted the importance of reducing emissions within the transport sector to complement their already impressive 92% green energy generation. Kenya is quickly emerging as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Africa, with approximately 2,100 electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, currently on the road. The country’s substantial energy capacity, with an installed capacity of 3,246 MW against a peak demand of 2,300 MW, supports significant growth in the EV sector. This transition to electric vehicles is expected to lower energy costs and enhance the quality of life by leveraging local energy sources. Naresh Leekha, group managing director of Simba Corporation's Motors Division, expressed the company’s dedication to supporting Kenya’s EV journey. The introduction of Mahindra electric vehicles in Kenya represents a positive step forward, with Kenya Power among the first to embrace these eco-friendly SUVs. #Kenya has released and launched a draft of its National E-mobility Policy that’s expected to encourage local production and assembly of electric vehicles (EVs).  Once approved, the policy will establish sales targets and investment criteria for domestic car manufacturers and assemblers to qualify for government incentives, with a focus on zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). #OurWorldInCharts: Global sales of electric vehicles 🚗 Fewer than 1% of vehicles are electric in South Africa 🇳🇴 The global average is 18%, with Norway topping 90% 🔌 South Africa has relatively few public charging stations: about 400 nationwide (versus 4,000 petrol stations) Fewer than 1% of the vehicles sold in South Africa in 2023 were fully electric or plug-in hybrids, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). In contrast, 93% of vehicles sold in Norway and 60% in Sweden are electric or plug-in hybrids. The global average is 18%. Fully electric cars are entirely battery-powered and must be charged. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles rely primarily on the battery for driving, with the combustion engine engaging when the battery is low. One reason for South Africans’ slow uptake of plug-in and fully electric vehicles is the relatively low number of charging stations. There are at least 400 public charging stations in South Africa, compared with about 4,000 major brand petrol stations. Neta Auto Enters Kenyan Market, To Boost EV Adoption in East Africa. Neta Auto, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has made its official entry into the Kenyan market through a partnership with local distributor Moja EV Kenya. The company has introduced its Neta V model, a compact SUV designed for urban mobility, to the Kenyan market. Priced at KSh 4 million ($31,000 USD), the Neta V offers a range of 380 kilometers on a full charge. MOJAEV AFRICA plans to import an initial batch of 160 Neta V models in the coming months, with the potential for local assembly in the future. This approach could further reduce costs and increase accessibility for Kenyan consumers.The entry of Neta into Kenya is part of a broader trend of Chinese EV manufacturers expanding their presence in Africa. This development is expected to contribute to the ongoing transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions in the region. Kenya recently launched a draft National E-mobility Policy aimed at encouraging local production and assembly of EVs. The policy includes measures such as setting zero-emission vehicle sales targets, developing charging infrastructure, and offering incentives for EV adoption. Additionally, Kenya Power, the country's primary electricity distributor, has announced plans to convert its fleet of 2,000 vehicles to electric models over the next four years. Across Africa, other countries are also advancing electric transportation initiatives. Nigeria has introduced an electric train service in Lagos, while South Africa is incorporating electric trucks and buses into various sectors. Rwanda has seen the emergence of an EV start-up ecosystem, particularly focused on electric two-wheelers.
