This year is set to be the hottest on record, with the global mean surface air temperature being 1.54°C above the pre-industrial average, according to the World Meteorological Organization. While many sports are affected by these rising temperatures, there is a particular impact on snowsports. Warming temperatures and changes to snowfall are not limited to Europe. A new study on the Alpine skiing system in the face of climate change in the Canadian province of Québec, Canada has recently been published by Ouranos with the aim of providing information on adapting to these changing conditions. It has been supported by the Association des stations de ski du Québec - ASSQ - maneige.ski, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR), Delorme Lajoie Consultation the Ministry of Tourism (MTO) and around 30 ski resorts. “In my view, there is a significant difference between Québec and Europe when it comes to winter sports,” James Guilbaud, a project manager for Tourisme Montréal with a specific focus on the sports market, tells Global Sustainable Sport. “While we lack towering mountains with high-altitude peaks, we benefit from extended periods of low temperatures,” he continues. “These provide abundant snow across our hills and valleys for many months of the year. However, climate change has brought challenges. We increasingly experience a lack of snow at the start and end of the season, which shortens our winter sports seasons.” Read the full feature 👇 https://lnkd.in/eXEKUDd8 Get our latest news and features first! Who would have thought skiing would be such a complicated issue at the intersection of climate change, power, and technology? According to the National Ski Areas Association, the 2021/2022 saw a record-breaking 60.7m visits to ski resorts in America. Only to be broken a year later with 65.4m visitors. All of this at a time when longer periods of warmer temperatures and increased effects of drought are forcing either the reduced operating days or outright closure of many ski resorts around the world. It's to a point for many resorts that the resource-intensive creation of artificial snow is no longer adequate to maintain necessary levels of snow for on-going operation. That's where new technology comes in. While still far from ideal, and in no way a long-term solution to the problem, this new technology mimics what happens in clouds. From increasing conversion to reducing energy to supporting a higher temperature range, the technology could be a lifeline for struggling ski resorts. With record-setting numbers of visitors, hopefully ski resorts are able to take the opportunity to educate how a changing, more volatile climate affects recreational activities so many people enjoy. #thefutureisnow #climatetech #sustainability #skiing https://lnkd.in/gDckKpJy

Recent data from aviation analytics firm Cirium and ski tour operator Ski Solutions reveals a remarkable 64% increase in demand for Norwegian ski destinations, particularly for December 2024. The average length of ski seasons will be cut from the current 105 days to 81 by 2030 and just 70 days by 2050 even if greenhouse gas emissions are cut radically, a new report from ANU and Protect our Winters has found. According to the report, “If these resorts continue to rely predominantly on winter skiing, they are unlikely to be economically viable past the next few decades." We must cut emissions this decade to protect our winters for future generations.

This is the year of the European ski vacation according to Campstories client Ski.com. They note that while domestic demand is basically flat, Europe is up considerably (about 40% YoY). According to CMO, Dan Sherman: “A lot of our customers have discovered that a ski trip to Europe is a lot easier and less expensive than they once thought. Flight access is very good from numerous American cities, and fares are reasonable. In some cases, it’s actually easier to get to Europe to ski than it is to get to the Rockies.” Check out Everett Potter's piece on Forbes highlighting why you too, should book that European ski trip! https://lnkd.in/gn-dX-8S #travel #ski #winter #wintertravel #publicrelations

Whilst the 23/24 winter wasn’t for the most part, nearly as doomsday as some media reports portrayed it, the medium-term outlook for corporate ski trips is one of change. Projections are for higher altitude, more exclusive and pricier events. But traditional resorts are busy adapting their event products to cater for a changing snowpack. Certainly, at the beginning and end of winter, there are likely to be many new distractions to complement the skiing. https://lnkd.in/d2r7uBVJ #incentivetravel #incentives #incentiveprofs #corporateevents #corporateeventplanner #eventmanagement #eventprofsuk #jaggedhorizons #events #MICE #meetings #meetingsandevents #conferenceplanning #altitudefestival
