Today, I received an email from a remote company (don't wish to expose its name) in which it was mentioned that my CV has been shortlisted for the position of Senior Frontend Engineer (Next JS) although I never applied in that company from any platform.
In the email, they mentioned that for the hiring process I will have to complete an assessment that was the frontend designing of an e-commerce web application on Next JS. It included the designs of two full pages with complete API integrations with a responsive design for the web and the mobile. They also shared the website's Figma design with the email. You can think of this assessment as a $200 to $400 job on Upwork.
This job vacancy looked different to me and I suspected this email due to the following reasons:
1. The Email:
I never applied in that company so how did they approach me directly via email with an assessment provided in it. Often good companies HRs approach you via email in which they first invite you for a phone screening or schedule a technical interview.
2. The Assessment Criteria:
Usually in job assessments, the recruiters ask you to create a github repository of your work and share its read access to a certain email address so that they can review your code. However, in the above assessment they asked me to create a fully fledged frontend UI, create a public github repo and also deploy it on Vercel.
After my suspicions, I analyzed their shared Figma designs and came to know that a lot of people have already completed their assessment 1 or 2 months ago, and they have rejected all of them claiming that they were not the best fit for the job.
The reason that converted my doubt into a confirmation was the use of fake email address in their email. One of the candidates attached the email address that he received after completing the assessment. They used a fake email address to respond to him.
So, dear #readers, through this email I would like to inform and advise all of you to #beware of these kind of digital scams and cross check their authenticity before engaging with them.
If, by any chance or case, you have already become a victim of these digital scams, let me drop a piece of advise for you not to become disheartened or disappointed for the future instead take them as opportunities and count them as the tiny small steps leading eventually to the fruitful results in near future.
