As many other economists, we are factoring in new U.S. trade tariffs in our outlooks. We will publish our new outlooks November 25. Meanwhile we explored a bad case scenario where U.S. tariffs on all its imports from China would rise to 60%. That would hit China hard, with its GDP growth falling below 2% in 2026 without major new stimulus. As my sector colleagues add, it would also have major repercussions in the U.S., since changing supply chains is hard and costly in several sectors. While this is now just a thought experiment, it underscores the risks from scaling up U.S. trade restrictions. See below for details.
