A historic chapter closes today (Nov 19) and new era begins! The #G20 presidency is now handed over to #SouthAfrica. 🚀Next stop for the G20: South Africa! This Tuesday (19), Brasil ends its G20 presidency with important progress made towards building a fairer and more sustainable world. The country officially handed over the presidency of the forum to #SouthAfrica, its successor in 2025. The closing ceremony of the G20 2024 Leaders' Summit marks the conclusion of Brasil's successful presidency. #Brasil passes the baton of leadership of the forum to its successor, South Africa. 📃Declaration Of The G20 Summit In Rio De Janeiro Approved. Africa's Seat at the G20 Table: A Step Forward or a Missed Opportunity? South Africa’s inclusion in the G20, now representing the African Union, is being celebrated as a win for the continent. But is it really? 🤔 While it’s a moment of pride, the decision-making dynamics within South Africa reveal a deeper issue. The Governance of National Unity—anchored by the ANC and DA—still reflects significant Western influence. How much of Africa’s voice is truly independent in these global forums? Here’s my take: The African Union should prioritize solving the pressing issues within its member states. Why worry about international diplomacy if we can’t first secure peace, progress, and prosperity at home? 🌍 This isn't isolationism—it’s strategy. The strength of global powers like the USA or Russia lies in their ability to focus on internal development before venturing into international leadership. They participate on their own terms. Over the next year, the spotlight will be on South Africa as it takes over the #G20 Presidency and hosts the G20 summit alongside approximately 130 international meetings. ❓ What will be its priorities? The country has adopted the theme ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability’. According to its President, Cyril Ramaphosa, the country will use the platform "to bring development priorities of the African continent and more broadly, the Global South, more firmly onto the agenda of the G20." However, these objectives will need to be converted into concrete proposals. ⏩ In a recent interview with the BBC News, Professor daniel bradlow from the University of Pretoria explains that the agenda will include topics such as debt and development, climate action, food security, fair trade, and colonial reparations. Finding the resources to finance these issues will also need be addressed - in both the G20 as well as in other fora such as the upcoming Conference on Financing for Development. As the first African country to host the G20, South Africa and the region have the opportunity to influence the global agenda and reap important benefits in terms of reputation and the economy. "The Group of Twenty (G20), is an intergovernmental economic forum comprising 19 countries and two regional unions - the European Union (EU), and recently the African Union (AU). It represent 85 per cent of the global economy, 75 per cent of world trade and 67 per cent of the global population. South Africa’s leadership of this group therefore presents a unique opportunity to shape global policies and advocate for Africa's interests on the world stage. The G20 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, UK and US, as well as the EU and AU." On Monday, our Chief Executive, Dode Seidu, was a panelist at the #VivekanadaInternationalFoundation, CUTS International, Geneva Event on “Mainstreaming the African Union into the G20.” It will be recalled that under the #G20 Presidency of #India, #Africa, represented by the African Union Commission gained a permanent membership status at the #G20, an informal group of countries who constitute 85% of global #GDP and 75% of #globaltrade according to the World Economic Forum. Africa, previously an observer at the #G20 and having only South Africa being a permanent member, now joins the #G20 gives #Africa a #voice to shape #globalpolicy and developments outside of other #multilateral fora like the #UnitedNations and #WTO. Dode Seidu made three key submissions during the panel discussion on Africa’s participation in the G20: 💡 Africa should position itself as ‘giver’ and not only a ‘taker’ at this global forum. This position implies that the continent should contribute actively to global discource and policies regarding #climatechange, #globalfinancialarchitectures, #sustainabledevelopment and #digitaltrade, #vaccines, #justtransition, among others. 💡 Africa should have a #unifiedvoice in global policy making. At the #G20, Africa, made of 55 diverse countries, will need to build #consensus and provide a unified voice. Where there are diversities in voice, the continent, represented by the African Union Commission, should speak on priority issues affecting the continent. 💡 Africa needs to build capacity unique to working at the #G20, the capacity to build internal consensus on the continent, align with others with mutual interest, negotiating favourable terms on conditions on debt forgiveness and contributing to the discourse in a constructive manner will go a long way to make Africa benefit from the #G20 participation.
