Brighton is often ranked a 'top student city', and Brighton has the largest student ratio of all UK student cities, with students making up 11.7% of the total population. More than 18,000 students study at the University of Sussex, with a further 18,000 enrolled at the University of Brighton - but how happy are they?
When it comes to the Guardian 2025 rankings both are languishing in or near the last third of the list. Sussex at 68/122 and Brighton 86/122 and both had fallen down the list. Of course there are other lists, but even in the Times 2024 list neither are top 40 institutions with Sussex 48/131 and Brighton 87/131.
With the student population playing a crucial role in city strategy, allocation of resources, planning decisions, and having a profound social, cultural and economic impact, they and everyone else expect their experience and outcomes to be as good as they can be. Too much is invested, too much is as stake.
If the title of 'top student city' is to be justified on both a qualitative and quantitive perspective, then the students and university's success, is the city's success. #students #happy #studentsuccess
