Entering the care system can be a daunting experience for children, often marked by confusion and loss. In Wales there are more than 7,000 children in care, many of whom arrived with their belongings in bin liners, fostering feelings of worthlessness. Heirs is an organisation addressing this crisis through its “love in a bag” programme, providing essential supplies and emotional support to children in care, instilling dignity and hope during a vulnerable period of their lives. According to the National League of Cities, short-term financial assistance programs are the least expensive policy intervention for preventing homelessness. Such examples include emergency rental assistance, security deposit assistance and utility payment assistance. This assistance can be vital to households experiencing circumstantial hardships that are making it difficult to pay their bills, the article states. This is what we are attempting to do through the Cooper Charitable Foundation. Most of the grants we have provided are paying for security deposits and first and last month's rent — the biggest barriers to housing. Other grants have helped pay someone's rent when they hit hard times. For instance, we assisted one man who got laid off but had a new position he was starting the next month. We provided that gap assistance. On 31st May 2024, Our team at Lift the Children, alongside two Charitable Children Institutions (CCIs) we serve, had the privilege of attending a stakeholder forum at Safari Hotel, Lilian Towers on the draft regulations under the Kenya Children Act (No. 29 of 2022. The forum was dedicated to evaluating the regulations developed to operationalize the Children Act 2022. One of the key submissions and recommendations we made was the removal of the renewal fees for CCI certificates, which the regulations had set at Kshs 25,000. We firmly believe that these fees should be abolished, allowing CCIs to renew their certificates free of charge. Given the financial constraints many CCIs face in providing for the children under their care, adding an additional financial burden is counterproductive. We are optimistic that our recommendations will be considered and that these changes will be implemented before the regulations are finalized and enacted. Research out of Yale shows people without children plan to leave significantly more of their estates to charity compared to those with descendants. How might we better engage this growing group?
