Is recycled nylon yarn feasible in the fashion industry? 🌱♻ Recycled nylon yarn is an environmentally friendly material made by recycling waste nylon such as abandoned fishing nets, fabric waste, carpets and industrial waste or waste plastics from marine debris and landfills. Although it is a recycled material, it maintains the performance characteristics of the original nylon and can be recycled, solving garbage pollution while reducing the demand for new resources. Many well-known global brands such as Prada, Gucci, La Perla, Adidas and H&M Group are using Econyl recycled nylon yarn to fulfill their brand's sustainable commitment. Did you know that the textile industry is one of the biggest waste producer? 😱 Clothing and textiles currently make up at least 7% of the total amount of waste in global landfill space. Between 80 and 100 billion new clothing garments are produced globally every year. 87% of the materials and fibers used to make clothing will end up in either incinerators or landfills. How do textiles affect our earth? During the decomposition process, textiles generate greenhouse methane gas and leach toxic chemicals and dyes into the groundwater and our soil. As of 2024, only 15% used textiles are theoretically ‘recycled’. Shocking isn’t it? That’s why I’m wearing this recycled scarf today! What do you think? I often hear that post recycled cotton is better than pre recycled cotton. In textile production, a waste due to cutting is often between 8 and 15%. Depending on the cutting pattern. Estimated you can produce only 3 t-shirts size Large from a kilo of single jersey cotton. The exact number depends on many factors. If you produce 10,000 t-shirts, you need an estimated 3,300 kilograms of cotton. This gives an estimated cutting waste of 333 kilos at 10% cutting waste. Normally this is thrown away, but with a pre-recycled cotton system it is ground and spun into new yarn. This way, you use 10 to 15% less cotton than in normal production, which means less impact on our environment. Considering that there are producers who produce hundreds of thousands of garments, this is a good step forward. Or do you have a different opinion?
