MIT Technology Review: These stunning images trace ships’ routes as they move Publicly available data helps monitor ship traffic to avoid disruption of undersea internet cables, identify whale strikes, and study the footprint of underwater noise. “Global Fishing Watch is an international nonprofit that uses AIS to monitor the fishing industry, seeking to protect marine life from overfishing. But it says that only 2% of fishing vessels use AIS transmitters.” By Jon Keegan https://lnkd.in/gZaHzFtS #technology #humanity

Unseenlabs Study Discloses Blind Spot in Vessel Tracking🚢 A recent Unseenlabs study has uncovered a critical blind spot in vessel tracking, with numerous ships operating without AIS transponders in the Pacific’s “High Seas Pockets.” These vessels, invisible to traditional monitoring systems, pose a threat to marine ecosystems and intensify illegal fishing. Unseenlabs' RF technology identified 77 RF emitter positions, with 32.5% uncorrelated with AIS signals (25 RF-only positions), highlighting a significant presence of dark vessels. One of the many advantages of the ICEYE SAR satellite fleet is its highly persistent monitoring capability. Vast maritime areas can be consistently covered, and suspicious vessel activity flagged. By focusing SAR imagery collection around protected marine parks and restricted national waters, we can uncover possible illegal maritime activity. Let the world's largest SAR satellite fleet help you expose illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. #IUUfishing #EarthObservation #SAR #Satellite #ICEYE

We're taking underwater biosecurity to new depths with the arrival of our new underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV). The device can be deployed to investigate reports of suspected marine pests and for surveillance in areas where they have been detected. 🚫 Our Marine Biosecurity team recently took the ROV on a test run in Cairns to familiarise themselves with its operation in a controlled environment. The ROV will enhance preparedness and capability, enabling inspection of underwater infrastructure and boats without divers in the water. This will be particularly useful around busy ports and in north Queensland, where there are ever present dangers lurking below the surface.

#YearInReview: The investigations into the 2021 catastrophic engine failure and fire aboard the fishing vessel Atlantic Destiny (M21A0041) and other similar occurrences identified that crew members do not always have sufficient knowledge of the necessary pre- and post-release stages in the use of CO2 fixed fire suppression systems. This led to the TSB issuing a safety concern in January. Find out how marine safety can be improved: https://ow.ly/TkcI50UnvYz #MarineSafety #EmergencyPreparedness #MarineTraining
