Want to take maternity or paternity leave from your job at Google? Think twice. Our client was laid off while on maternity leave, and she wasn’t the only one. Gomerman | Bourn & Associates has filed a discrimination lawsuit on her behalf against Google and their parent company Alphabet Inc. Attorney Maria Bourn says our client “was a dedicated employee who put off having children for Google and when she had a baby her worst fears came true, she was let go. Google’s conduct was not limited to [her], but several others on maternity or paternity leave were all let go at the same time.” Our client worked for Google for 15 years before she got pregnant. “Google forces their employees to choose between their jobs or starting a family,” the former employee says. “They turned what should have been one of the most joyous times in life into a nightmare.” In total, seven employees were terminated and five of them were either on maternity/paternity leave at the time or had recently returned from leave. This kind of discrimination is unacceptable and we are honored to represent this dedicated former employer in her action. If you have been unlawfully terminated or faced discrimination as an employee at Google or any other company, you have options. Shared Parental Leave is one of those things we hear about but don’t really understand. With uptake still as low as 5% nationally, there aren’t that many people to ask! Tomorrow I’m taking to Aaron Briant about his experience of shared parental leave. We’ll be talking about how it works, the reaction of his employer and colleagues, and the question I always want to ask…what was his back to work experience like. If you’re thinking of taking shared parental, or maybe your partner is, or maybe you’re a manager or expert within your business looking to hear about how to make it a success, then come and join us! #sharedparentalleave #dads #workingfathers #workingdads #familyleave

Something really cool about Google: They have a Paternity Leave Pledge! It was created by Erez Levin and got MORE THAN A THOUSAND signatures since it first launched…including from many senior execs. 👏 I love this initiative because it proves you don’t need to be in leadership to impact the culture at your organization. And it’s great to know there are employees like Erez out there who continue advocating for paid parental leave for all parents. (Which, shameless plug, Erez talks about in episode 8 of The False Tradeoff!) Does your company have anything like this? Would love to hear about it. 👇 #parentalleave #culture

Having built in the leave space for the past 4 years one thing I know without doubt is how important it is for companies to walk the walk when it comes to employee utilization of leave. It’s easy to have a leave policy and check the box, it’s much harder to create a culture where people feel comfortable *using* the policy without fear that it will put them behind. Many companies think about leave as a “pause” in the employee’s journey at the company. At Cocoon, it’s simply a part of your trajectory. Kerri Graham joined us a member of our CS team and came back from parental leave in March as leader of our CS org. Christina Walker Rakestraw previously led our CS org and came back from her parental leave in March as leader of our Sales org. If you’re building a culture where you recognize and reward high performance, an employee taking leave shouldn’t change anything in that equation. Leave doesn't negate the impact someone has had or can have on the company. Stories like this demonstrate how prevalent the “leave penalty” still is across companies big and small. Everyone is better off, employee and employer, when that leave penalty is eliminated. https://lnkd.in/gdgf-Y8D

For so long, the conversation around parental leave has been all about length, with many employers expanding their policies to offer new parents more time off. Here's why all managers should be equipped with a structured return-to-work plan for team members who take a parental leave: #ParentalLeaveSupport #EmployeeEngagement #WorkplaceFlexibility #NewParents
