In Kenya, over a quarter of hospital visits are related to psychological issues. Yet, less than 1% of the National Health budget is allocated to mental health. With the enduring stigma around mental health and the lack of resources to properly support people dealing with these issues, mental health shouldn’t be a topic reserved for just one day a year. #WorldMentalHealthDay We are incredibly proud of Thalia Psychotherapy, one of the winners of our #CallForChange funding and mentorship programme, created in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Ministry of Health, Kenya. See how they’re using #AI to connect people with mental health support in Kenya! https://lnkd.in/gXbmHERG #MentalHealthCrisis #MentalHealth #ArtificalIntelligence

Since 2018, we’ve piloted and evaluated Self Help Plus (SH+), a low intensity intervention developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for managing stress and copying with adversity. In 2019, we adapted SH+ for use among South Sudanese refugee men in Rhino camp by including case study examples of alcohol use. We implemented the adapted version of the SH+ intervention together with another WHO intervention called ASSIST (Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test). Learn more about how we’re sharing low-cost, sustainable mental health interventions with marginalized populations, giving them the tools to empower their lives. https://lnkd.in/eKTxwtrY

🌱THE FRIENDSHIP BENCH: "A Model of Culturally Competent Mental Health Care"🌱 The Friendship Bench (FB) project is an evidence-based initiative created in Zimbabwe to address the gap in mental health care. It focuses on improving mental well-being and quality of life through problem-solving therapy provided by trained lay health workers, targeting individuals with common mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Developed over two decades through community-based research in Zimbabwe, the FB employs a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach at the primary care level. It specifically addresses "kufungisisa"—a Shona term meaning "thinking too much," which closely relates to depression. A distinctive feature of the FB is its use of community "grandmothers" to deliver therapy. These volunteers, who have no prior medical or mental health training, are trained to provide counseling. Sessions typically consist of six structured 45-minute meetings held on wooden benches in discreet areas within clinic grounds. #MentalHealthMatters #FriendshipBench #CulturallyCompetentCare #GlobalMentalHealth #CommunityBasedCare #TherapyForAll #CBTApproach #MentalHealthInnovation #Kufungisisa #AnxietyRelief #DepressionSupport #ZimbabweHealth #LayHealthWorkers #AccessibleMentalHealth #EmpoweringCommunities #GrandmotherTherapists #ProblemSolvingTherapy #MentalWellBeing #EvidenceBasedCare #HealingTogether

Mental health in Africa should be more than just building apps for accessing therapy. We should also focus on educating the average African on what mental health means in the first place. #mentalhealthawareness #africa #oriusmedical

Working on mental health issues in Gaza post-war requires significant effort and advanced techniques. The region's prolonged conflict has led to widespread trauma, making mental health support critical. Providing effective care involves understanding the unique psychological needs of the population, which have been shaped by ongoing violence and instability. Therapists must employ culturally sensitive approaches and innovative strategies to address the deep-rooted trauma and foster resilience. Collaborative efforts with local organizations and the integration of community-based interventions are essential. These efforts are not only about healing but also about empowering individuals and communities to rebuild and thrive in the face of adversity. #Gaza #mental_health
