Lockheed Martin - Increased Smallsat Production 🛰🏭 ✨ There is a backlog of 100 smallsats on order from DOD + Intelligence customers from Lockheed Martin ✨ Space Development Agency (SDA) = Organization under the U.S. Space Force that is working on building a satellite network in LEO ✨ SDA Contracts = Fixed-price bids from satellite manufacturers ✨ Lockheed Martin opened a smallsat assembly facility in Denver, Colorado in 2023 (Can manufacture 180 spacecraft per year) 🎙My thoughts: I think Lockheed Martin expanding into the SDA smallsat contracts is strategically a good move. The fixed-price bids could be a challenge if there are production issues. There is also a potential for the smallsats to be manufactured cheaper/more efficiently which could increase the margin Read more below ⬇

🚀 BAE Systems has successfully acquired Ball Aerospace, marking a significant advancement in space and defense capabilities within their US operations. Ball Aerospace, known for its expertise in spacecraft, mission payloads, and optical systems, has been serving key clients like the US Department of Defense and the intelligence community. I am undoubtedly biased but this strategic acquisition will result in a fusion of exceptional talents and technologies. According to GlobalData's insightful report, “Thematic Intelligence: Space Systems in Aerospace and Defense (2023)”, this development is set to reshape the defense industry landscape. Ball Aerospace's involvement in high-tech projects for both NASA and the ESA is a testament to their pioneering spirit and innovation. What's particularly exciting is the formation of the Space & Mission Systems sector under BAE Systems, with Dr. Dave Kaufman at the helm. This sector promises to blend the strengths of both entities to align with the US National Defense Strategy and Intelligence Strategy. BAE Systems, Inc. President and CEO, Tom Arseneault, highlighted the significance of this acquisition, “This acquisition underpins our strategy to deliver growth and advance our technology and innovation portfolio in high-priority areas identified in the US National Defense Strategy and the US Intelligence Strategy. Together we will leverage our combined capabilities to develop and deliver cutting-edge space, science and defence solutions to advance our customers’ critical missions.” As we look ahead, I am personally eager to see the cutting-edge space, science, and defense solutions that will emerge from this partnership. Here's to new possibilities, groundbreaking innovations, and a stronger defense landscape! #BAESystems #BallAerospace #AerospaceAndDefense #Innovation #SpaceTechnology #StrategicAcquisition #IndustryLeadership 🌌🛰️🌍 https://lnkd.in/eefYpYmZ

Since the U.S. Space Force was founded in December 2019, I've been very interested. Is the like NASA or Star Wars? Maybe a bit of both?! Seriously though, the U.S. Space Force is doing great work. It has recently unveiled the new Commercial Space Strategy that seeks to set a path for leveraging tech innovation to serve their top four guiding principles: 1. Balance - Avoid an overreliance on a single solution or provider 2. Interoperability - Strengthen both government and commercial sector 3. Resilience - Diversify supply chains and gain visibility into all risks 4. Responsible Conduct - Align with legally and ethically compliant providers This strategy aligns with the National Defense Strategy and the Department of Defense to ensure transparent collaboration, establish effective risk management strategies, and secure the successful future of America!

Not discussed in this article is payload processing. Payload processing capacity will also be strained as DOD shifts to small satellite deployments that ensure resiliency of our space enterprise. As the number of satellites increase, payload processing demands will also increase. My Space Systems Integration (SSI) team is working closely with our customers to find innovative ways to increase payload processing capacity to meet DOD and IC demands for the future. This is going to require different ways of thinking. This will also require new partnerships.

The Defense Department should step up support of commercial space companies to take advantage of capabilities that might otherwise be lost, a new report concludes. That recommendation is among several in a study called Space Agenda 2025 released Oct. 24 by The Aerospace Corporation and its Center for Space Policy and Strategy (CSPS). The report is intended to provide advice to the next administration on key topics in civil, commercial and national security space. In a briefing held in advance of the report’s release, Sam Wilson, systems director at CSPS, said the Defense Department is benefitting from growing commercial capabilities in areas like commercial remote sensing, much of which was fueled by a boom in private investment in space companies several years ago. Private investment has dropped significantly since a peak in 2021, though, and investors say access to capital remains difficult for space companies today, especially those trying to raise larger, later rounds. #connectivity #connectivitymatters #military #communications #security #networksecurity #newspace #newspaceeconomy #strategy #constellations #satellite #space #satelliteoperatos #satcoms #MILSATCOM #GOVSATCOM #satellitesystems #satelliteoperations #ops #opsec #telecommunications #spaceindustry #LowEarthOrbit #LEO #MEO #GEO #multiorbit #sda #megaconstellations #spaceindustry #esa #nasa #eu #europe #resilience #oneweb #starlink #kuipers #spacex #smallsats #ADS #spacecraft #internetofthings #development #spacedata #iris2 #multiorbit #hybridnetworks #MichaelHadjitheodosiou

Space systems are going through a revolutionary change fueled by both the ability to launch more things into space faster and the digitization of the ground infrastructure and convergence with terrestrial networks. This applies to both government and commercial satellite systems. As we head into 2024 and look around, the space industry is fundamentally different from what it was decades ago, thanks to first- and second-order effects from embracing commercial innovation. SpaceX set a record-breaking cadence of nearly 100 launches last year, heralding a new revolution in access to space. The Space Development Agency (SDA) operationalized several tranches of its layered hybrid architecture and paved the way for the Defense Department’s orbital blueprint, the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. And all branches of the United States military, not just the Space Force, set into motion how they plan to leverage space in mesh networks supporting joint all-domain command and control systems. But while the launch and satellite segments have come into their moment as government and industry become more and more integrated, the true unsung heroes of the space business are on the ground. Although vital to the overall space mission, ground systems rarely get the credit, and are shorthanded and under-resourced amidst the fanfare of kicking off new space missions. #nationalsecurity #intelligence #connectivity #cyber #connectivitymatters #hacking #military #communications #cybersecurity #security #infosec #networksecurity #newspace #newspaceeconomy #strategy #constellations #satellite #space #satelliteoperatos #satcoms #satellitesystems #satelliteoperations #ops #opsec #telecommunications #spaceindustry #LowEarthOrbit #sda #megaconstellations #spaceindustry #esa #nasa #eu #europe #cyberwarfare #cyberdefense #defense #jamming #antijamming #resilience #oneweb #starlink #spacex #telesat #milsatcom #govsatcom #sda #spacecraft #internetofthings #development #spacedata #iris2 #cubesat #MichaelHadjitheodosiou https://lnkd.in/eSnYBvDR
