I love animals. As an only child, nature was my sanctuary (still is) and wildlife fascinated me. And my pets were my best friends; I often preferred time with them over people. Nearly everyone at Point of Reference loves animals as well (found my people). I think an organization's people help define its culture. And when possible, the people and their passions should be highlighted, regardless of how "businessy" they may be. We're #peoplebeforeprofessionals, after all. So this year, featured at #CustomerXCon, we're doing a CMA Pros & Pets contest! Rescue dogs can prove to be great friends and companions for those young and old. - Get your four-legged friends spayed or neutered to help combat overpopulation. More than three million dogs enter shelters every year, many due to overpopulation. - Volunteer at your favorite shelter or at another animal healthcare facility. As they can’t afford to pay employees, many rescues and shelters depend on volunteers. - Make a donation to your local rescue. The Challenge of Fundraising for Animal Welfare 🐾 In the world of fundraising, animal welfare can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Unlike human services, where the impact is often immediate and visible, our work at the Humane Society of Missouri focuses on giving a voice to those who can’t speak for themselves—our animals. What drives us as fundraisers is knowing that every dollar raised translates directly into lives saved: a puppy rescued from neglect, a senior cat finding comfort in its final days, or a rehabilitated animal thriving in a forever home. But we also know it takes creativity and connection to inspire people to see the value in our work. My team and I are always looking for new ways to tell these stories, build trust, and connect our community’s passion to the urgent needs of the animals we serve. When we connect hearts to our mission, we not only raise funds—we build a movement of people who care deeply about the well-being of all creatures in our city. To my fellow fundraisers: never underestimate the power of storytelling. It’s the bridge between empathy and action. One of the coolest things about being a copywriter and editor? Accidentally becoming an expert in all sorts of random topics! Take my work with animal charities, for example. After spending five years in-house at Cats Protection and collaborating with them as a freelancer for another seven years, I've picked up loads of facts about cat behaviour and welfare. (For instance I could tell you exactly where to place a scratch post so your cat is more likely to use it, and why most cats don’t want their tummies rubbed, even if they roll over onto their backs for you!) And thanks to working with a myriad of other animal charities, I could probably hold my own in a conversation about dog behaviour and training too. Over the years, l've had the chance to dive into everything from climate justice to maternity care, humanitarian aid, spinal cord injuries, digital computing, and so much more. Every project is like a crash course in a new subject.
