🌱 Embracing Humble Beginnings 🌱 Every success story has a chapter that often gets overlooked: the humble beginnings. Mine is no different. I grew up in a household where dreams were big, but resources were limited. I vividly remember nights spent around the only table we had, my mom stressing over bills while I tried to help balance the budget with calculations behind my Maths book. Those moments were tough, but they were also rich with lessons. I learned the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and the incredible strength of a united family. My journey began with an internship at Consolidated Bank, where I dove into the world of finance. Those early days were filled with curiosity and determination as I soaked up every lesson. Soon after, I landed my first official job at CCI Global. Surrounded by colleagues who seemed to have it all figured out, I sometimes felt small. The title “customer service representative” was often met with dismissive nods. But instead of shying away, I leaned in. I saw every interaction as a chance to make a difference, to grow, and to build connections. Each time I turned frustration into satisfaction, I found strength in my role. Those early experiences were the foundation of my resilience, igniting a fire within me that would guide my journey. Now, as an Executive Partner at Athena, I look back at those early days with profound gratitude. They remind me that every path has value, no matter how humble. They remind me to uplift others who may feel overlooked or underestimated. Never despise your beginnings; they are the soil from which your greatest achievements will grow. Let’s celebrate every step of our journeys, no matter how small, for they shape us into who we are meant to be. 🌟 #HumbleBeginnings #Resilience #GrowthJourney #ValueYourStory #UpliftOthers

Something I have learned from counselling students & families, and managing teams of students & faculty, is to take their lead in improving processes and on-the-ground client services. One suggestion from our Senior Career Peer, Amanda Chacon Brown, and supported by all Career Peers, was to increase our appointment times from 25 minutes, to 40 minutes to reflect the real time it took to thoughtfully facilitate an appointment. As this was my first time opening up the school year in this position, I took the month of September to collect data on how appointments were run. I saw that 30% of our appointments were back-to-back double bookings as they required more time. Additionally, conversations tended towards rushed, and Peers were unable to keep their five minute buffer time between appointments (for entering appointment notes, taking a brain break and prepping for their next appointment) because 100% of appointments ran overtime. Since our change to 40-minute appointments in October, we have been able to maintain our five minute buffer in the vast majority of appointments, and had 90+% of appointments finish within their scheduled timeframe. The Studio is calmer despite being busy, and the quality of conversations has shifted. On the slower days, appointments which wrap up early allow for additional time for drop-in's, something that was not possible in September. Reduced stress allows Peers to focus on thoughtful deep facilitation as opposed to beating the clock, which is an improved experience for both Peers and students. Go team! (How's that for a STAR story?! :) Want to craft one yourself? Come on down to the Studio - we can help!)
Our Career Peers support students and alum from all programs at VIU across all aspects of their career journey. In order to stay current on both our knowledge and coaching skills, we meet weekly to crowdsource unique client situations as well as role play our different appointment types. This week, the Peers chose to role play Career Exploration, a complex appointment type that requires exceptional active listening, information literacies, inquiry and ways of knowing, and disciplinary expertise - all of which are VIU Graduate Attributes. VIU offers many on-campus opportunities for students to further develop their Graduate Attributes which can be found in our VIU Opportunity Directory. The Peers were excited to strengthen their skills in this area (in addition to extensive training, shadowing, and individual mentoring, Peers rotate role playing through all appointment types multiple times within a year), and are excited to engage in meaningful conversations with students as they plan their futures. From ABE to Red Seal, certificate, diploma, Bachelors and Masters degree granting programs, you are all welcome. Part (1/2): End of an era: My Journey as a full-time student “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu, Chinese Philosopher After 18 years, 4 studies, and after my Master graduation at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, my time as a full-time student has come to an end at an age of 22. It started in a small village at a primary school with just 60 students. After receiving Gymnasium advice, I cycled over 150 kilometers a week to attend an excellent highschool (St. Michaël College). There, I chose the most challenging track: combining Science & Technology with Science & Health, concluding with an unforgettable research trip to the North Pole. While exploring academic options, I found my passion in business, leading me to study Science, Business & Innovation (SBI). This program taught me how innovation and entrepreneurship work and how to commercialize new developments. After many practical cases, a research internship at ABN AMRO Bank N.V., 3 committee roles, and 2 international research projects I began asking how innovation fits into a company’s bigger picture. This led me to pursue a Master's in Business Administration, specializing in Strategy & Organization, which perfectly complemented my Bachelor’s. And that year also brought me a lot of valuable things, in terms of knowledge, experiences and network. Now, I feel ready to enter the professional world. But learning doesn’t stop here for me. Staying relevant and making a lasting impact means always evolving. So, I am excited to embrace lifelong learning as a tool to adapt and make a meaningful difference. Stay tuned for Part 2 tomorrow, where I’ll share more about the start of my career!
