🔸 The integration of technology into education has undoubtedly revolutionized the learning experience, enhancing student engagement, satisfaction, and overall success. By utilizing digital tools and resources, educators can create dynamic and interactive lessons that captivate students' attention and foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter. 🔹 Moreover, technology-driven learning environments have been shown to increase student motivation, encouraging active participation and a willingness to explore new concepts. 🔸 In that context, the Erasmus+ Project ARCH is exploiting each country's cultural heritage, aiming to improve students' digital and cultural literacy skills. By harnessing the rich tapestry of cultural heritage from each participating country, the Project not only broadens students' perspectives but also instills a sense of pride and connection to their cultural roots. 🔹 More specifically, four different digital educational games 🎮 are currently being developed within the framework of the Project. One digital game for each of the participating countries (Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Italy) will soon be ready to be tested by educators and students in elementary education. 🎯 The aim of these games is to provide students with an enriching and enjoyable learning experience. Through interactive activities and educational challenges, students will learn about the cultural heritage and history not only of their own country, but also of all the involved countries. 🔸 For each of the participating countries, two cultural sites of exceptional importance have been chosen. Through interactive storytelling and engaging challenges, children will learn about the history, significance, and cultural context of each site, fostering a deeper understanding of global heritage. Utilizing virtual reality elements, players will be able to explore these landmarks, allowing for an immersive experience that sparks curiosity. As the students/players progress through the game, they will be uncovering fascinating facts about these sites, making learning an exciting and enriching experience. I’m excited that my son’s school, Horizon English School, Dubai, is making a bold move to go phone-free this year! It’s yet another reason why I love the school and its focus on raising happy, well-rounded children. While some might view it as a small step, I believe it’s necessary. There is extensive research highlighting the negative impact of social media on teens, and this initiative is a step in the right direction. As someone who develops educational material, I often ask: where do we draw the line with technology in the classroom? While tech has greatly advanced education, apps that quantify and reward/penalize student behavior, or even suggest conversation topics to parents based on classroom data, can overlook the individuality and unique experiences each child faces daily. It’s crucial we don’t forget that. On the flip side, technology has transformed learning, breaking down barriers and expanding access to education in ways we couldn’t have imagined before. Meet Lungile Maile! Lungile is an African Impact Initiative Challenge 2023 winner. Currently, she, along with the rest of her cohort, are in Toronto as part of the AIC experience. Lungile is from South Africa and is the founder of Nubian Smarts; a company which aims to tackle the education crisis in Africa through fun educational games. A fun fact about Lungile is that while she grew up in South Africa, she was actually born in Swaziland, her mother’s home country. However, her father comes from Lesotho... making Lungile’s cultural identity a make up of Mosotho, Swazi, and South African! Lungile founded Nubian Smarts inspired by her desire to create a better future for her son. In 2015, an international body tested the mathematics and physics proficiency of grade 3 and grade 9 students in various countries, and South Africa ranked among the lowest. At that time, Lungile was working in the manufacturing industry and noticed a shift in employment requirements for machine operators, who now needed a minimum grade 12 education in mathematics and science. When Lungile asked former workers why they didn't reapply for these jobs, they explained that they couldn't meet the new educational requirements. They had found mathematics and science challenging, and when these subjects became optional in school, they chose to drop them. Understanding the intimidation many students feel towards STEM subjects and inspired by the popularity of mobile games like Candy Crush, Lungile founded Nubian Smarts. Her goal was to make learning math and science fun, approachable, and affordable for all children, regardless of their background. She wanted to create the kind of learning environment she wished she had experienced as a child, making STEM accessible and helping African children engage with the world’s developments in AI and technology. While in Canada, Lungile aims to learn about Canadian teaching methods and form partnerships within her industry. She hopes to bring valuable lessons and innovations back to South Africa, furthering her mission to improve STEM education for all children. On November 20th, we held our pre-kick-off online meeting, marking the start of the STEM Sports Education project, funded by Erasmus+! 🎉 This innovative project aims to combine STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with Sports to create engaging learning opportunities for secondary school students, especially girls. By integrating these fields, the project aims to boost critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. 🎯 Project Objectives: 1. Increase accessibility to STEM topics for students aged 12–15, emphasizing girls' participation. 2. Develop key STEM skills using sports as a practical, real-life context. 3. Equip educators with tools to promote interdisciplinary learning and inclusion. 4. Share best practices across Europe for integrating STEM and sports education. 📖 Key Activities: 1. Development of a STEM Sports Learning Toolkit with non-formal activities. 2. Creation of a Training Program for Educators in STEM Sports. 3. Field research and focus groups to localize and innovate approaches. 4. Dissemination of resources to foster sustainability and widespread impact. 🤝 Consortium Partners: This exciting project brings together seven organizations from four EU countries: Vrije Universiteit Brussel - Belgium Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) - Spain INQUIRIUM.eu - Cyprus ASD Sport Compass - Italy Three secondary schools GO! Atheneum Etterbeek KA Etterbeek (Belgium), Institut InsBitàcola (Spain) and Gymnasio Latsion (Cyprus). 📅 What’s next? The official kick-off meeting will take place in Cyprus on January 13–14, 2025, hosted by INQUIRIUM Ltd.
