Fitting to come across this GREAT, short article about war, escalation, and exhaustion after our students played their capstone exercise “Pacific Overmatch” wargame last week. At least in my seminar, there was no decisive battle - it was truly a draw. Both sides escalated vertically and horizontally in an attempt to gain an operational advantage, and to compel the opponent to submit (see https://lnkd.in/evFfV6WH). The conflict would have continued longer- and barring quantitative or technological overmatch, wars always will go on longer than planned. https://lnkd.in/evXHad3a

A bit of a celebratory post here. Recently I hit a milestone in my journey as a developer that I am quite proud of. I RELEASED MY FIRST SOLO DEVELOPED GAME. Granted, there are some issues and there are defiantly things missing. Building it from the ground up in Unreal Engine defiantly came with some challenges, and I had to put the game's development on pause during my software development bootcamp. After finishing the Software Engineering Immersive at General Assembly. I didn't know if I was gonna go back to the project or not. I had a playable game and I was right near the finish line. It was supposed to be a mobile game, but the amount of issues I was encountering made it more trouble than it was worth. I figured it would be easier just to make a new game in different engine. However I could not let the project stay unfinished. So I pivoted and ported the game to PC. I did some testing with several friends and the game worked for the most part. I did this by making the game available to them for download on Itch.io. That brings me to today where I am here to proclaim that the game Defense of Coconutia is available now for PC via the link. https://lnkd.in/gzPxHDyf Now here are my closing thoughts. Did this fulfill my initial vision for the game? No, it did not. The game is very much an early playable prototype, and is missing mechanics that I wanted to implement. As well as it did not release on its originally intended platform. Then why make this game? When I started making Defense of Coconutia, I had one goal. That was to solo develop a game and release it by making it publicly available. It had to be something where someone could boot it up, and play through a game loop. I did just that. To me Defense of Coconutia is more than just a released game. Defense of Coconutia is undeniable proof to myself that I have the ability to make games. Now there is just one thing left to do... Had some computer issues followed by some Unreal issues that led to having to rebuild my test level, but I'm finally back on track. Here's a video showing some progress I've made on the turn based combat system. I have made support for multiple combats going on at the same time (you can see the combat handlers being displayed as red spheres in the video for debug purposes), independent of each other. Characters can only act on their own turn and the combat will end automatically when one "side" is all gone. Next step is to implement merging of combat handlers when characters from different combats interact with each other.

We teamed up with Wargaming's World of Tanks Blitz and their holiday collab with deadmau5 to bring their game to life, turning an in-game tank skin into a real-world spectacle spanning from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. 💥 We also crafted a custom website to allow fans to track the location of the tank & learn more about the event, and deployed strategic visual command posts (billboards) in both cities that captured civilian attention with maximum effectiveness. 🔥 I love ENDER's Game as a #wargamer and not for the reason you think. Most think of the story as a depiction of adolescents winning a war by playing a video game. For me, I love the DECEPTION of portraying a #wargame as the vehicle to collect inputs and ideas. For me, the future is clear on what advanced and emerging technologies will provide to those willing to explore nuanced applications of those tools. #Wargaming is a tool in your toolbox. It is not a hobby, a memory, a nostalgic trip down the past to remember fondly. We stand on the shoulders of giants in this profession, specifically remembering legends like the Wrens (See Link - https://lnkd.in/dH5J94Yx ), and in my opinion have yet to return to something so critical in the space. If we want to argue, as #wargamers that we can provide value to organizations, then we need to stop focusing on pitching new games and start pitching new ideas.
