At #COP16 #Biodiversity, leaders reached new milestones: a global levy on drugs derived from nature’s genetic resources and a commitment to amplify Indigenous voices in conservation. These are significant breakthroughs in acknowledging the value of biodiversity and the wisdom of those who safeguard it. Yet 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻. Despite new agreements, developing nations left the summit with unmet funding promises, underscoring the urgent need for global equity in conservation efforts. 🌍 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗻. Every year, we consume resources equivalent to 1.75 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘀. This unsustainable trajectory is driving us beyond planetary boundaries, threatening both ecosystems and communities worldwide. The #𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 is one important approach to combat the biodiversity crisis and promote sustainable resource use. 📈 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. Conversations on circularity have tripled in five years as more leaders recognize the need for a regenerative approach. Awareness is no longer the barrier — action is. 📉 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. Global use of secondary materials has dropped from 9.1% in 2018 to 7.2% in 2023. During this period, we consumed 500 gigatonnes of resources, or 28% of all material since 1900. The path forward is clear but steep #COP16 is a reminder that we must turn ambition into action. With planetary boundaries tightening, real change will require collective commitment, global funding, and equitable support. 🌍 #COP16 in Cali this year highlighted just how urgent and essential #nature and #biodiversity action has become. I’ve been inspired by the momentum around nature-focused action and the steps being taken, though key challenges still remain. Here’s some of my takeaways: 1️⃣ Budget and Action Plans Lag Behind Ambitions – Interest in nature is at an all-time high, but budgets and national action plans need to catch up. 2️⃣ Companies Embrace #TNFD and Nature Action – More businesses are moving beyond commitments and are starting to implement nature-focused strategies, especially in risk management. 3️⃣ Tech-Enabled Metrics Revolutionise Nature Impact – Tools like satellite imaging and #AI are empowering companies to measure real-world biodiversity impacts more accurately. 4️⃣ #Water and #Forests Are Inseparable – COP16 highlighted the essential link between water and forest conservation, with Indigenous knowledge key to sustainable solutions. 5️⃣ Bridging the Nature Funding Gap – Blended finance models are making headway, but redirecting subsidies toward nature projects remains a critical challenge. Yesterday I participated as a speaker in an event at COP16. The title of the session was: Circular Solutions: Reviving Biodiversity, Crafting Resilient Built Environments. The session started with Rebecca Nohl, co-author of the new Global Resources Outlook 2024 report giving an overview of the state of global materials use and effects. She highlighted the fact that resources use are increasing and mainly caused by the built-up environment. Extracting and processing materials are responsible for, hold your breath: 60% of carbon emissions 40% of air pollution health impacts and more than 90% of water stress and biodiversity loss. You don't believe me? See for yourself at: https://lnkd.in/dzru3i3a This clearly explains why circularity is a universal strategy to achieve multiple targets in society. And there are clear implications for businesses. Well captured in this report:   https://lnkd.in/dypRGpDu Slendy Diaz from the government of Colombia gave an overview of their impressive work with strategies and interlinking them. They have national strategies for circular economy, green growth and a climate change management plan as well as a biodiversity action plan. There are not very many countries that can boost that! I hade the honor to showcase some of the work we at Sweco have been involved in that ticked off all the three factors (circularity, biodiversity and resilience). They are of course intrinsically interlinked and it is almost impossible to address one without affecting the other two. If you go circular, you lower the pressure on biodiversity and thereby strengthen resilience. If you aim to increase resilience, you should go for nature-based solutions where you could strengthen biodiversity etc… One thing that unites the successful projects are the fact that they all involve dedicated clients as project owners, and almost always I see forming of good and broad partnerships united by a shared vision and high ambitions. I think that is the main takeaway for success. Well formed partnerships. In the panel, I was joined by experts from ARUP and Arcadis that chipped in their experiences. Overall, it was a very enlightening session and it feels good and right to focus on solutions that are being implemented today and that can be scaled and inspire action all around the world. Having a room full of meeting delegates that can spread the word gives hope for the solutions to be spread.  Maybe that is as good as an outcome of the COP16 as any negotiation text :-) #transformingsocietytogether

🌍 At #COP16, I highlighted a critical issue: despite years of discussions and sustainability initiatives, the rate of biodiversity loss continues to increase, specifically in South America. Our reliance on short-term optimization strategies has locked us into a cycle that fails to address the root causes of this social and environmental challenge 🌲🌲🌲 Matias Ramirez emphasized the urgent need for transformative change. We must shift our focus to place-based dynamics and the relationships communities have with their land. By empowering local actors, we can unlock the potential for system change that fully bends the curve of biodiversity loss 📈 Protecting biodiversity means safeguarding the communities that depend on it. Their knowledge and governance structures are vital for fostering resilience and sustainable development. In strong, engaged communities, we find the seeds for long-term solutions. Every two years, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity brings global leaders together for the “Conference of the Parties” (COP), where they make critical decisions for ecosystem protection and restoration. This year’s COP16 theme, “Make Peace with Nature,” called attention to the urgent need for action, with finance front and center. And although the U.S. isn’t officially a part of it, #ICLEIUSA is helping lead the charge for American cities! The #ICLEI Highlights: 🌱 The CitiesWithNature platform will partner with the City Nature Challenge, bringing biodiversity tracking to local communities for its 10th anniversary! 🌐 ICLEI mobilized a UN Biodiversity meeting, at which the City of Seattle’s Deputy Mayor Adiam Emery joined leaders from Beijing, Yokohama, and Montreal to advance the Global Biodiversity Framework. 🌱 #CitiesForward Nature-based projects inspired a learning session with Los Cabos, Boulder, and Mendoza on urban biodiversity solutions. 🦅 Seattle and Barranquilla, Colombia, are teaming up to protect migratory ospreys as part of the Journeys for Life initiative. 🏙️The City of Boulder and the City of Austin, along with 17 other cities worldwide, are launching the Berlin Urban Nature Pact for urban biodiversity. ✨ Want to know what’s next?
