Workforce development has never been more important. As we prepare our next generation to enter the construction industry, it’s imperative that we equip them with a firm understanding of the array of opportunities and possibilities that lay before them. From state legislation to associations like AGC of Kansas, the amount of support that they’ve given to post-secondary education has been unprecedented in our state. It’s exciting to see programs like Build Up Kansas take such big strides in Kansas’ workforce development.

Next week will mark the three month point of me starting work at Skills Street, working towards a more broad understanding of exactly what we are lacking, what we need more of and how we can start to do things differently to piece together the South #Yorkshire regional skills agenda. My thoughts (and motivations) so far ... - We consistently compete for people, regardless of sector: Whilst business capability and expertise is developing, and is absolutely on show, the competition for 'highly skilled' workers will only increase. - Passive progression: We aren't investing, at the level needed, to help existing employees to understand future roles and opportunities in industry. - We have to keep good people here, recognising talent to attract more talent! Are we truly reaching our potential - the skilled workforce is often there but remains 'untapped talent'. Perhaps the most important observation, collaboration across all the above (#recruitment) can often be limited or hidden. We are turning the corner, reflecting on fantastic sessions and meetings this week with Mark Cocken & Alex Reynolds at UTC Sheffield City Centre, Nikki Jones & Rebecca Blackburn at the quarterly AMRC Training Centre Industry Advisory Board meeting and Rachael Dickens and specialist training teams at The Sheffield College - it is critically important that we join the dots to make our region competitive. An opportunity to do exactly that, is here, talk to us about your part in the jigsaw - https://lnkd.in/eXzgXy_A P.S. If this post was a hashtag it would probably look like #businessgrowthstrategy + #peopleandculture × #talentacquisition + #cpd ÷ #collaborationforchange = #betterfuture

‘The challenges of teacher recruitment and retention in England’ The release of this blog from Ofsted today is very timely after the conversations I’ve been having this week around the challenge of staff retention and the impact of diminishing budgets and overwhelming workloads on staff and leaders. Almost a year ago the Annual Report of His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills 2022/23 stated, “In schools, staff shortages are reducing expert teaching, increasing stress, limiting intervention when children struggle, and creating a barrier to teachers accessing training and development.” However, one year on and, with leaders wearing many hats, covering numerous roles and regularly overworking causing stress and burnout, the climate seems no different. An effective retention strategy not only enables a school to hold onto and maximise the potential of the talent they have, but due to word of mouth it also enhances recruitment opportunities. The best type of retention strategy is based on what staff truly need and the culture they work within. We all know that our staff and leaders make us what we are as a school, so if you’re thinking about how to support leaders and their teams, get in touch by DM to see how we could work together to enable them to thrive in these challenging times.

Day 1 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth! The POP team with amazing support from @annette and @jen our learning partners have been working on our #narrative. The aim is that it becomes a shared narrative with others across Plymouth. In light of recent events this feels even more important. The stories we tell ourselves have dramatic impacts on what we can imagine for the future. At our AGM this year we'll introduce a shared narrative for the city that we have been crafting this year with input from many, before hosting an open dialogue to dive deeper into our collective story. We believe that by sharing, and learning from each other, we can better create a future that's vibrant and inclusive: ‘more’ Plymouth, not ‘less’. A place where diversity, excitement and creativity thrives – we believe it is in the differences between us (liminal spaces) that the excitement lies. But in order to #BeMorePlymouth, we must first see more Plymouth. Come and join us for the conversation. I believe that we need a rebalancing #FromItoWe - this is what underpins the shift we need. When we start making this shift everything looks different. #economies #power #funding #organising #structures #recruitment #financialcontrol #risk #meetings #timeframes #decisionmaking #impact #learning #accountability and many of the rules we generally take as base assumptions start to unravel when we put the collective and individual into balance. Over the next 5 weeks I will be making a daily post taken directly out of this #sharednarrative. I hope this helps you engage with our thinking and our work. This is important stuff - we urgently need to hold conversations that actually matter. Not about whether mine is better than yours, or whether we are hitting arbitrary targets but missing the point - but about how we create the future.
