Not only is it one of TIME's best inventions of 2024, it's now open source! On November 11, 2024, Google DeepMind announced the open-source release of AlphaFold3, their advanced protein-structure prediction model. This decision follows earlier criticism from the scientific community regarding the initial withholding of the model's code and training weights, which had limited researchers' ability to predict protein interactions, particularly with potential drug compounds. With the release, academic scientists can now download and utilise AlphaFold3 for non-commercial purposes, enhancing their capacity to model complex protein interactions. However, access to the training weights currently requires an academic affiliation. This move is expected to foster innovation and collaboration within the scientific community, building upon the success of AlphaFold2, which had previously been made open-source. The recent open-source release of AlphaFold3 by Google DeepMind marks a significant milestone in the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and biological sciences. AlphaFold3, an advanced AI model, has demonstrated remarkable proficiency in predicting protein structures and their interactions with other molecules, including DNA and RNA. This capability is pivotal for understanding complex biological processes and accelerating drug discovery efforts.
