Poynter Institute, the International Fact-Checking Network, and MediaWise, backed by Google News Initiative, are teaming up to boost fact-checking and media literacy in Canada. This exciting new program has three main initiatives: 1. Empowering Fact-Checkers: We'll provide training and support to Canadian fact-checking organizations, helping them grow and thrive. 2. Educating the Public: The Teen Fact-Checking Network will continue to equip young Canadians with the skills to spot misinformation and become informed digital citizens. 3. Combating Misinformation: By strengthening fact-checking and media literacy, we aim to reduce the spread of false information and build a more informed public. Trust in social media platforms to act in the best interest of the public continues to fall. For example, 55% of Canadian residents have low trust in TikTok – compared to just 8% who have high trust in the platform. So where do Canadians place their trust? Canadians trust public libraries (89%) and schools (81%), as resources to learn about digital literacy and misinformation: significantly higher trust levels than the news media and the federal government. Australia is lagging behind when it comes to media literacy. Most Australians can't identify misinformation online. And they want help. Very fortunate today to have a conversation with two leading researchers in this space – Sora Park and Tanya Notley – about all things #medialiteracy, including the government's recent commitment to develop Australia's first National Media Literacy Strategy. Keep your ears peeled 👂 – the episode will be published later this week.

It will. Corporates need, and I believe, support a strong media. Disruptive advertising models and sound management are desperately needed. #traditionalmedia #newmedia #digitalmedia #journalism

This qualitative study shows both media and policymakers in Kenya and Senegal as pro-fact-checking, and pro-media literacy, to counter misinformation. Frankline Matanji, Melissa Tully, Kevin Mudavadi, Layire diop & Dani Madrid-Morales "Journalists, fact-checkers and policymakers lauded fact-checking and media literacy as effective strategies for mitigating the spread of misinformation, suggesting that both strategies should be used simultaneously to empower both media consumers and producers against misinformation". Putting it into practice is the challenge.

Addressing misinformation within marginalized communities requires fostering media literacy, enhancing trust in external information sources, and encouraging direct communication. Together with Mina Kirkova, a journalist for Deutsche Welle and Factcheck.bg, I worked on a report titled "Where is misinformation spreading in marginalized communities?" for the Association of European Journalists. Australians use social media more often than any other type of media, yet 97% of us lack the skills to verify the information that we find there. This Week’s Analysis & Policy Observatory (APO) Top Report is: Online misinformation in Australia: adults' experiences, abilities and responses ➡️ apo.org.au/node/328959 from the News and Media Research Centre and Western Sydney University 🔍 When asked, most Australians were not confident they could identify misinformation online. ❌ Of the 42% who said they could, 39% of them had no ability to do so when tested. 👀 Only 3% could demonstrate they knew how to verify information online. As more of our lives move online, this research highlights the need for evidence-based media literacy initiatives to make sure all Australians are equipped to avoid, identify and respond to misinformation. #misinformation #disinformation #medialiteracy Sora Park, Tanya Notley, T.J. This is an excellent article on a very important topic. ⬇ ❗ Local media play a key role in the survival of communities. ❗ Countries are built on local communities. If these are lost, the whole society becomes atomised, with the consequence that people become vulnerable individually and collectively. This must not be allowed to happen. We have recently written on the subject, highlighting the responsibilities and opportunities of publishers of small local newspapers. https://lnkd.in/drmBNTWy But the fact is that lack of resources often thwarts even the best laid plans. Local media need help. It is very important that America's Newspapers keeps this issue on the agenda. 👍 #localmedia #localnews #localcommunities https://lnkd.in/esqQw4iQ

Data has fast become the new currency of digital journalism business. But flawed access and flawed ways of monitoring data mean there is a growing divide between the haves and the have nots. In a new blog by IMS media development experts Clare Cook and Rashweat Mukundu, they unpack how IMS is working to shine a light on the technical barriers that bar many media in Africa from accessing the data they need to operate, whilst supporting the necessary advocacy work to drive change. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxx6xXZY

The girls' team from the YO Media project, in Lisbon, this May. Almost about to finish the project. In the light of current global health crisis and military conflicts, the media play a key role in documenting events and ensuring the information flow between information sources, including government or policymakers and citizens. Given the urgency for having the latest and updated piece of information and pressure in newsrooms, fighting against message decontextualization and misinformation through literacy has been more and more in demand. The YO-MEDIA project aims to fill the gap in the information about media literacy in times of crisis, e.g., outbreak crisis and military/war conflicts. The research question is ‘In what way can game-playing foster youngsters’ media literacy in times of crisis?,’ and a mixed-method approach is, therefore, followed. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are combined to assess the feasibility of game-playing to create awareness of misinformation through learning by doing and doing by playing.
