Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) play a crucial role in attracting, retaining, and facilitating private investments. This was the key focus of an event organized by EDB Madagascar and STAR Madagascar in collaboration with Economic Development Board Mauritius and ARbiochem. On the 23rd of May 2024, an event, titled "Attracting, retaining and facilitating private investments: the key roles of an Investment Promotion Agency," brought together experts and stakeholders in Antananarivo, Madagascar to discuss the importance of IPAs in driving economic growth and development. Participants explored the various functions of IPAs, including investment promotion, facilitation, and aftercare services. They also discussed best practices and strategies for IPAs to effectively attract and retain private investments, as well as the challenges and opportunities in the current economic landscape. The event provided a platform for knowledge sharing and networking, fostering collaboration among investment promotion agencies and other key stakeholders in the region. Indonesia Aims for $3.5 Billion in Deals at Africa Forum. Indonesia is set to sign trade and investment agreements worth $3.5 billion with African countries during the second Indonesia-Africa Forum, held in Bali from September 1-3, 2024. This initiative marks a significant increase from the $600 million in deals secured during the forum's inaugural session in 2018. The forum aims to strengthen economic cooperation and expand Indonesia's export markets amid global trade challenges. Key sectors targeted for collaboration include energy, healthcare, agriculture, and mineral resources. Notable agreements expected to be signed include a memorandum of understanding between Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, PLN, and Tanzania's Tanesco for geothermal power projects. Additionally, Indonesian pharmaceutical firm Bio Farma is set to finalize a master agreement with Ghana's Atlantic Lifesciences for vaccine technology transfer. 🇧🇮 Burundi Assumes New Chairmanship of COMESA The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is a regional economic community in Africa with twenty-one member states stretching from Tunisia to Eswatini. Its 23rd Summit of Heads of State and Government is underway in Bujumbura, Burundi, where President Evariste Ndayishimiye has assumed the bloc’s leadership, taking over from his Zambia’s counterpart Hakainde Hichilema. As the new Chair, Mr Ndayishimiye will guide the 21-member trade alliance for the next year. The summit, held on October 31, 2024, centered on the theme “Accelerating Regional Integration through the Development of Regional Value Chains in Climate-Resilient Agriculture, Mining, and Tourism,” setting a focused agenda on bolstering cooperation across these critical sectors. The gathering also established a new COMESA Bureau, designating Burundi as Chair, Kenya as Vice Chair, and Zambia as Rapporteur. A key outcome of the summit was the announcement of a programme aimed at connecting 100 million people to clean energy within seven years, highlighting COMESA’s commitment to sustainable development. #Burundi

Uzbekistan and Germany establish technological and industrial partnership for 2024-2026  On September 15, a round table in Samarkand highlighted Uzbekistan's progress in investment reforms, including a threefold increase in FDI and an 8% rise in industrial production. The meeting showcased Uzbekistan's strategic goals and agreements with Germany, focusing on sectors such as copper manufacturing and vocational training. 🇺🇿Active preparations for the Tashkent International Investment Forum are underway The third Tashkent International Investment Forum will be held in Tashkent on 2-3 May 2024. TIIF is one of the largest events not only for Uzbekistan, but also for the region as a whole. Its programme traditionally includes: a plenary session at the level of the head of state, more than 50 discussion meetings of experts, including panel sessions, round tables and b2b negotiations. Previous exhibitions in 2022 and 2023 attracted thousands of participants from many countries. Tashkent International Investment Forum concluded with $26.6 billion in signed agreements, an almost 2.5x increase from the previous year. The largest investments include Saudi Arabia's DataVolt pledging $4 billion in direct investments for urban infrastructure and a green data center in "New Tashkent", ACWA Power - Central Asia's commitment of $6.2 billion and UAE's AMEA Power $1.1 investments into renewable power generation in Karakalpakstan.
