🌾 We recently visited the Natoora team who are participating in this year’s GFM farm trials, as they seek to explore how they can support the development of a global common language for sustainability. Natoora sources seasonal fruit and vegetables direct from farms, selecting and preserving distinct, diverse varieties that contribute to a nutritionally and ecologically resilient future for the food system. Since 2004, they have been building a unique supply chain that bypasses mainstream, homogenised systems and distribution channels in order to support traditional growing practices and varieties otherwise in danger of being eliminated by high-yield, intensive agriculture. The Global Farm Metric team were able to spend some time with the Natoora team to explore the #GlobalFarmMetric framework in more detail. The team were shown how to complete the GFM assessment so that they’re able to support their network of farmers who will participate in the trials. The assessment included practical on-farm elements like counting earthworms, surveying lichens on trees for air quality, and invertebrates in the stream and pond for water quality. In the second Issue of IJAE, 2024, P Indira Devi, Deepthy Antony, and Umaiban MM shed light on genetic resource ownership in their paper "Who are the Owners of Plant Genetic Resources? An Analysis Based on the Status and Trends of Registration under the PPVFR Act 2001." The research examines the evolving landscape influenced by India's Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act, 2001, showcasing a shift towards increased private sector and farmer participation from the initial dominance of public institutions. The study advocates for state-led registration to safeguard against resource privatization, promoting fair access and agrobiodiversity conservation. News from the 84th Annual Conference of ISAE! 🌍 Combatting Hunger with Sustainable Agricultural Practices 🌾 The Allianz Sufosec, of which Skat Foundation is a proud member, has released compelling new data showcasing the impact of agroecological farming practices on reducing #hunger and #malnutrition. Through a study involving over 35,000 smallholder households across 29 countries, the results are clear: hunger and malnutrition have decreased by an average of 15% over three years in farms that have adopted agroecological methods. The Global Alliance to Fight TR4, of which IICA and international partners from academia and industry are part, is trying to find solutions to the disease caused by the Fusarium TR4 fungus, the most aggressive disease that affects bananas and plantains worldwide🍌. 🇨🇴 Sebastián Zapata, from Cenibanano -Colombia- explains that all biosafety measures are aimed at preventing the entry of contaminated soils into the banana fields. Likewise, 🇪🇨 Marianella Ubilla (AEBE, Ecuador) refers to the serious consequences of TR4 migration. Finally, agricultural engineer Beatriz Arrieta, Regional Manager of Bayer's Food Value Chain, invites you to enter the #IICA page where you can download all the specific training modules against TR4.

Natural + agronomic selection - ecotypic wild relatives of crop plants on permanent meadows and pastures (genetic biodiversity) - potential for adaptation and insurance in uncertain times Through in-situ conservation of wild relatives (ecotypes) of forage crops for the breeding of forage plants, more emphasis is being placed on natural selection besides agronomic selection. - Principle: What succeeds lasts. Switzerland compensates for preserving local genetic diversity in non-biodiversity promotion areas because of the potential for breeding fodder plants adapted locally and to a complex environment. To this end, populations of wild relatives of modern forage plants are maintained on meadows and pastures that have never been sown before, simply by continuing traditional utilisation. The great advantage of this preservation of genetic biodiversity compared to seed banks/ex-situ conservation (https://lnkd.in/dnwybt9w) is that the species can continuously adapt to climate change or changing pest pressure, for example. A valuable contribution by the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) to the conservation of production-relevant biodiversity at the genetic level. Diverse meadows and pastures are maintained as habitats at the landscape level, for which there is differentially intensive management - i.e. intensive and extensive use and fertilisation - throughout the country, i.e. in all biogeographical regions. https://lnkd.in/d9arjMJA
