🌟 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘁 🌟 In the last few months, I have had intense conversations with IT managers regarding platform maintenance and technical debt. It has been frustrating to see essential maintenance downplayed and mislabeled as technical debt. A common argument I hear from IT leaders is that maintenance work is a tough sell during work prioritization meetings with business stakeholders. The real challenge for leaders is effectively communicating the importance and benefits of regular maintenance to the business stakeholders. In his weekly newsletter "𝙇𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡 𝙐𝙥", Patrick Kua wrote about this topic, which perfectly complements this discussion. Pat talks about an approach taken by Tyler Miller at Catawiki, who successfully rebranded "tech debt" as "tech foundations" to secure business investment. 🔍 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲: 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸: Call it "tech foundations" instead of "tech debt" to highlight it as an investment with straightforward returns. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀: Demonstrate the value by citing examples like bumping dependencies, switching frameworks, or automating manual processes. 𝗚𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘆-𝗜𝗻: Secure agreement from business partners by creating transparency about standard work and its value or risk reduction. This rebranding of tech debt is a great way to change perceptions and secure business buy-in. Additionally, I have found success by highlighting the connection between regular maintenance, improved reliability, enhanced user experience, and overall system performance. One way to do this is to use past incidents where regular maintenance prevented significant issues. By doing so, you can demonstrate how essential maintenance contributes to the long-term success of our projects and the organization. My post sparked many conversations within my teams, leading to open and honest discussions with Managers and Leads. In this follow-up post, I share my key takeaways from these engaging discussions. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘁? 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: Maintenance requires significant resources in terms of money and time. IT managers might see it as a non-urgent expense that can be delayed, much like technical debt. 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝘀. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: The benefits of maintenance are often long-term and not immediately visible. This leads to prioritizing immediate, visible improvements over regular maintenance tasks. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲: Some IT managers may not fully appreciate the critical nature of maintenance, viewing it as a cost center rather than a value-adding activity. So why is this perspective problematic? 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝘀. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅𝗲𝘀: Treating platform upkeep as technical debt can result in a reactive approach, addressing issues only when they become critical. This inevitably leads to higher costs and more significant disruptions. 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Regular upkeep is essential for system reliability and performance. Neglect can lead to degraded performance, increased downtime, and a poor user experience. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: Platform maintenance includes applying security patches/updates. Ignoring these tasks can leave the platform vulnerable to cyber-attacks, with potentially severe consequences. Trust me; nothing is more stressful than an anxious CISO banging on your door for urgent security patches and upgrades! 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Delaying maintenance can create actual technical debt. Over time, the system becomes more challenging to update and deploy, requiring even more resources to address accumulated issues. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Neglecting platform maintenance in favor of addressing it as technical debt can lead to many problems. Treat platform maintenance as an essential investment in the health and longevity of the system, not as a discretionary expense. This ensures ongoing stability, performance, and security, ultimately contributing to the overall success of our organization. Have a great weekend, everyone! #TechLeadership #ContinuousImprovement #SoftwareEngineering #EngineeringExcellence
