#Powerelectronics community, back to my office, my personal thoughts about this #PCIM edition: 1. When I walked through halls, my first feeling was there were fewer people than last year. Then I realized that most people were not equally distributed on booths! #Infineon clearly captured most people attention and got (I guess) the most visitors. As #Infineon was the last booth on the hall 7, that makes me feel a few people in the show! 2. Speaking about #Infineon, I was really impressed by their broader product portfolio. They have everything to everybody! From the bulky press pack module for Wind/Rail application to the #GaN embedded chip for small power supply. Impressively, this one company is providing dual sourcing for their E-mode GaN technology with production lines in Villach/Austria and Taiwan's #TSMC. 3. As everybody knows, #EV is driving the market requirements. I heard from experts, if #EV players have asked to operate at 125°C, all industry would rush to find a solution for them. However, and motivated by the slowdown in EV sales, big players are now looking to explore new markets for their new technologies (designed first for EV market). #WBG players want to diversify and enter more conventional market like motor drivers for industrial segment, #UPS or #Rail. 4. #PV, #Wind and #Grid converter are driving higher voltage devices like next gen of 2kV, 3.3 kV (and beyond) #IGBT or even #SiC. 5. #Bidirectional #OBC is becoming a must to make #V2L. This feature doesn't have a significant added cost. No more count device. It's about controlling switches. 6. In passive components: the #film #capacitors are gaining market share & trustful. However, conducting discussions with some end-users, they'd be happy to push further the rating temperature. 7. #Hybridpolymer capacitors is the tradeoff technology between solid polymer and electrolytic one. It combines advantage of high temp & high capacitance but still has low voltage. Many cap players get involved into this area. 8. Finally, a beautiful open question from #Wolfspeed about the next wave in electrification. In its presentation during Bodo's panel, VP marketing said it could be off-road #mobility (#aircraft & ship). #press 🔌Charging your #car in the garage instead of at a #fastcharging station is practical, but inefficient. This is because the charging process takes significantly longer and sometimes results in high charging losses. Bidirectional blocking transistors made of gallium nitride (GaN) promise a remedy here. 🚗 Researchers at #FraunhoferIZM and Technische Universität Berlin are testing the use of these components with the support of Delta Electronics, BIT GmbH and Infineon Technologies in the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung funded EnerConnect project. The aim: a new type of circuit for #electric vehicles. ⚡The efficiency and power density of the rectifier can be significantly increased, while at the same time the materials required and thus the costs are reduced, as the adaptation of the grid voltage to the battery voltage can take place in one converter stage instead of two, as is currently the case. 🔗The full text is available on our website: https://lnkd.in/evJbx7R3 Stefan Hoffmann
