Our recent cardiothoracic fellows workshop for TEVAR advancement was a productive and insightful 3 days. Attendees worked through case studies, simulated procedures and engaged in thoughtful discussions about thoracic endovascular repair techniques with leading cardiothoracic surgeons. Thank you to those who joined us, especially our esteemed presenters, Marvin D. Atkins Jr., M.D., FACS, Chris Mehta, M.D. and Brad Taylor, M.D. If you weren’t able to attend, stay tuned for upcoming workshops at gmd.cm/i9q. #GoreMedical #Cardiothoracic #TEVAR

What a pivotal moment in #cardiothoracic #surgery, what a long road to get to this point and potentially life saving #LVAD technology that is now available to patients. Well done, Emory University and BrioHealth Solutions! 🫀 Here’s a good overview of #LVAD : https://lnkd.in/e9myNAyH
Cardiothoracic surgeons at Emory University implanted the BrioVAD System, a new type of ventricular assist device from BrioHealth Solutions, for the very first time in the United States. The advanced technology, designed to minimize adverse events and improve quality of life, has been under development since 2008. #BrioVAD #cardiology #LVAD #Heartfailure

Importance of preventive medicine and a medical provider that is actually listening and looking outside the box!
Giant aneurysm of the distal aortic arch/descending aorta in a 41-year-old female patient with increasing dyspnoea, cough and hoarseness at Luzerner Kantonsspital. The patient had a history of severe trauma years ago, but no further investigations were carried out at that time. How would you treat this patient? (We will reveal later what our interdisciplinary team of vascular surgeons, cardiac surgeons, neurologists, anaesthetists, etc. did) Prof. Dr. med. Maani Hakimi Dr. med. A New device in the horizon…
🚨 First European implantation of the Corheart 6 LVAS system 🚨 The CERC team is proud to congratulate the outstanding team at Medizinische Universität Wien for the successful first European implantation of the Corheart 6 Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS). This innovative device, developed by Shenzhen Core Medical Technology Co., Ltd in China, provides vital mechanical support to patients with heart failure. While previously tested in China, this is the first implantation in Europe, with the patient continuing to recover well 3 months post-procedure! Special recognition goes to Prof. Daniel Zimpfer, principal investigator (PI) and Chair of the EACTS Heart Failure Task Force, alongside co-investigator Dr. Julia Riebandt. We also extend our thanks to Prof. Potapov Evgenij, the coordinating Principal Investigator, who traveled from Berlin to support the Vienna team during this milestone procedure. At CERC, we are honored to witness and support such advances in cardiac surgery that push the boundaries of healthcare innovation. What I found most interesting in this article is the need for multidisciplinary teams and avoiding gaps not just in care but in participating specialists and their expertise needed for optimal outcomes. For example, the article defines endocarditis as "a complex clinical challenge that requires input from infectious disease experts on the choice and duration of antibiotics and a comprehensive strategy on the timing and type of surgical repair. "In addition to a surgeon and infectious disease expert, teams often involve microbiologists, neurologists, nephrologists, cardiologists, and others as different complications arise." "Finally, continued optimization of GDMT with monitoring of blood pressure and renal function is key to improvement in survival rates and reduction in rehospitalizations. Recent data from the COAPT trial noted a high level of intolerance prohibiting the use of all pillars of heart failure therapies or achieving target doses." And, "Outpatient clinics are, therefore, crucial in order to identify adverse events and tailor the medical regimen to the individual patient." Now, how can we coordinate all of these functions, this care, and these specialists? And, if, as demonstrated, good outcomes depend on this level of care coordination, how are all the participant providers compensated in a VBC, ACO, or MA model?
A testament to multidisciplinary collaboration! 🤝 The journey from early angioplasty to modern structural heart disease treatment showcases the incredible teamwork between interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.
