2025 Hiring Trends for the Restaurant Industry: Labor Shortages Continue The restaurant industry’s hiring struggles aren’t easing up, and new data shows that finding workers will be even more challenging. According to a survey from Expert Market and Toast, 82% of restaurants are actively looking to hire, underscoring a critical workforce shortage that’s impacting how efficiently restaurants can operate. The survey, published in the *Food & Beverage Industry Report 2024*, highlights some key points that reveal the depth of the hiring crisis in the industry, as well as some of the most sought-after roles. Here’s a breakdown of what the findings suggest for 2025: Who’s in Demand? Among the roles that are most in demand, experienced chefs top the list, with 30% of respondents listing them as a priority. Dishwashers (12%) and cashiers (7%) are also high on the list, indicating that both back-of-house and front-of-house positions are tough to fill. This means many restaurants are trying to cover shifts across multiple critical positions to keep service running smoothly. Why Are Labor Shortages so Widespread? The industry is no stranger to high turnover and seasonal fluctuations, but other factors are compounding today’s staffing problems. A combination of fewer available workers and other career options that are often less strenuous has made it tougher for restaurants to attract employees. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, around 1.7 million American workers are currently “missing” from the workforce, further tightening the labor pool. Additionally, shifts in demographics and evolving job dynamics are hitting the restaurant industry especially hard. Workers have new expectations around flexibility and working conditions, making the physical demands of restaurant jobs less appealing compared to other options. Major Challenges Ahead Labor shortages (23%) were listed as the second-biggest challenge by restaurants in the survey, right after increasing operational costs (27%). Without enough workers, restaurant operators find it difficult to maintain consistent service quality, manage busy periods, or expand hours to meet demand. In many cases, businesses are being forced to adapt by reducing hours, limiting menus, or investing in tech solutions to help ease the strain on staff. Moving Forward in 2025 As we look to 2025, it’s clear that restaurants will need to find creative ways to attract and retain talent to stay competitive. This might involve offering better wages and benefits, investing in training to build loyalty, or exploring more automation where feasible. Labor challenges won’t vanish overnight, but adapting to these realities can help restaurants navigate the current landscape and come out stronger in the long run.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀! Recruitment is often viewed as a behind-the-scenes process, one that occurs while we go about our daily routines. However, the impact of recruitment on our everyday lives is more profound than we might realize. From the companies we work for to the products we use and the communities we live in, recruitment shapes our world in many ways. Let’s explore how recruitment intersects with our daily lives through a specific example: the food industry, particularly our favorite local restaurant. This is one place where we often go and visit. 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 Recently, I went to one of my favorite local restaurant for dinner. The warm ambiance, friendly staff, and delicious food that I experienced are all a direct result of effective recruitment practices. Here’s how recruitment influences our experience at that restaurant: 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: A restaurant's hiring practices directly influence the service quality. If management prioritizes recruitment based on skills and customer service, we enjoy a better dining experience, with friendly and knowledgeable servers encouraging us to return. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Hiring for cultural fit fosters a positive work environment. When employees feel valued, they interact cheerfully with customers, creating a welcoming atmosphere. 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘂 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The chefs and kitchen staff, hired through a thoughtful recruitment process, bring their unique skills and culinary backgrounds to the restaurant. A restaurant that focuses on hiring talented chefs will create innovative dishes that keep customers coming back. This emphasis on quality and creativity not only enhances our dining experience but also supports the restaurant’s reputation in the community. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Hiring passionate individuals helps restaurants contribute to local events, strengthening community ties. 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀: In a rapidly changing food industry, recruitment helps restaurants stay relevant. For instance, hiring staff knowledgeable about dietary trends (like veganism or gluten-free options) ensures that the menu reflects current consumer preferences. Our dining choices are influenced by how well the restaurant adapts to these trends through effective recruitment. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Our favorite local restaurant shows how important recruitment is in our daily lives. The way the restaurant hires staff affects the quality of service, workplace culture, menu options, and community involvement, all of which shape our dining experience. By understanding this connection, we can appreciate how recruitment helps local businesses and improves our time there. So, the next time we eat at our favorite spot, let’s remember how effective hiring plays a key role in making our experience enjoyable.

What is the biggest challenge in the F&B industry? is it the #customers? is it the #innovation? NO!! it's the #hiring! Yes, hiring staff remains the most challenging aspect in the F&B industry. Attracting candidates from a bigger brand is a distant option as they prefer a high salary and established processes. When a staff changes in an outlet, it has a very significant impact over customer service, food preparation & everything that the person is involved in because the new person cannot replicate the same work in a months training. I would like to seek some advice from my fellow #foodpreneurs for the solution of such a deep problem that still exists in changing landscape of the industry. #hiring #staff #foodpreneurs #challenges

The Impact of Wrong Hiring in Restaurants. Hiring employees for a restaurant isn’t about finding skill or experience; it’s about ATTITUDE. Hire the attitude, grow the altitude (i.e. hire for "desire" then train them UP). #RestaurantManagement #RestaurantEmployees
