In news that may seem right out of a sci-fi film, sources report that SpaceX is currently building a #network of spy satellites under a classified contract with the U.S. government and intelligence agency. The network, which reportedly costs almost $2 billion, is being built by Elon Musk’s Space X Starshield #business unit. The contract was signed back in 2021 between Space X and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) – an #intelligence agency managing spy satellites. Diving deep into this partnership, this #contract clearly shows the deep ties billionaire entrepreneur Musk’s #company , Space X, has with the U.S. security agencies. The project that is currently underway shows the extent of Space X’s involvement with the #military too as it illustrates a deeper Pentagon #investment into low-orbiting satellites that can support the ground troops. If successful, the sources confirm that the program would tremendously increase the U.S. government and military's strength, whereby they would be able to locate potential threats significantly faster all over the #world . Space is evolving into a critical warfighting domain. With the U.S. Space Force indicating the potential anti-satellite (ASAT) capabilities developed by Russia and China as a reason for the need for suitable space-based countermeasures, it is clearly an ongoing arms race in the space domain. Multiple space commands are being reinforced while some have detached to reestablish themselves as dedicated Space Forces. With both kinetic and non-kinetic counterspace capabilities gaining prominence in the space domain, the defense forces now have consciously taken up the objective of establishing their respective space-based military deterrence across a wide range of use-cases. The DoD is getting serious about space cargo delivery, allocating substantial funding this year to advance the capability. Orbital cargo drop and point-to-point delivery are video game-like capabilities where a platoon leader in the field can order resources—say, engines, medical supplies, or satcom terminals—to be delivered from space within 60 to 90 mins.
