Throughout September – Suicide Prevention Month – we’re sharing valuable resources to help healthcare organizations identify suicide risk early and prevent crises before they happen. The suicide epidemic is more widespread than many realize. Over 13 million people seriously considered suicide last year. Understanding who these individuals are and connecting them to care is mission critical for healthcare organizations. Blake Madden explores this further in a recent Hospitalogy Deep Dive, which features NeuroFlow’s innovative suicide prevention approach, and offers advice for early identification and support: https://lnkd.in/e6PYffay #suicidepreventionmonth #suicideprevention

Today, September 10th, marks World Suicide Prevention Day. During the time it takes to read this message, one person in the world has prematurely died by suicide. Annually, over 700,000 people die needlessly by suicide, the majority of whom are men. Alarmingly, the number of young people affected is also significant. In Finland, nearly 750 individuals die by suicide each year, representing approximately 0.1% of global suicide deaths, despite Finland’s population constituting only 0.07% of the world’s population. Although the suicide mortality rate has been declining, we must strive for better, especially as we, Finland, have been recognized as the world’s happiest country for the seventh consecutive year. The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation.” This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide involves transforming our perception of this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. World Suicide Prevention Day, celebrated annually on 10 September, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and endorsed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The event focuses attention on the issue, reduces stigma and raises awareness among organizations, government, and the public, giving a singular message that suicide can be prevented. Suicide can affect every one of us. By raising awareness, reducing the stigma & encouraging action we can help to reduce the instances of suicide around the world. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of support. Key facts (PAHO) *In the Region of the Americas, 98,000 suicide deaths per year were reported on average from 2015 to 2019, with the suicide rate in North America and the non-Hispanic Caribbean higher than the regional rate. *About 79% of suicides in the Region occur in males. The age-adjusted suicide rate among males is more than three times higher than in females. *Suicide is the third-highest leading cause of death among young people aged 20 to 24 in the Americas. People aged 45-59 have the highest suicide rate in the Region, followed by those aged 70 and older. *Suicide is the fifth-highest cause of DALYs in the Americas, with an almost nine-fold range considering the percentage of total burden, from 0.4% in Antigua and Barbuda to 3.6% in Suriname. “The theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" is about shifting from a culture of silence, stigma, and crisis to one of compassion, education, prevention, support, and empowerment. It's about transforming how we perceive the complex issues surrounding suicide, suicide experiences, suicide loss and attempts, encouraging open conversations, and fostering a society where those in need feel supported and understood. Globally, more than 700,000 people die by suicide each year, with profound social, emotional, and economic repercussions. In Canada, the impact is equally staggering, with more than 11 Canadians dying by suicide every day. The theme for WSPD 2024-2026 emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma and starting conversations about suicide, aiming to create a supportive environment where suicide is preventable, and we acknowledge the challenges in living with support, advocacy, and change.” #WorldSuicidePreventionDay https://lnkd.in/gJBKBnSE

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September), and the International Association for Suicide Prevention has chosen the theme ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide,’ accompanied by the call to action, ‘Start the Conversation.’ This theme holds particular importance for the Murrumbidgee region, which currently has the highest suicide rate in New South Wales. Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network’s (MPHN) Suicide Prevention Lead Emma Bromham is urging Murrumbidgee residents to rethink how we approach and discuss suicide. ‘Changing the narrative on suicide means transforming our collective perception of this complex issue,’ Ms Bromham said. ‘It's about moving from a culture of silence and misunderstanding to one characterised by openness, empathy, and support. ‘Changing the narrative on suicide seeks to inspire individuals, communities, organisations, and governments to engage in honest and constructive conversation about suicide and suicidal behaviour to break down barriers, enhance awareness, and build a more supportive environment for all.’ A simple, heartfelt conversation can make an enormous difference. Genuinely listening and showing care can offer crucial support and potentially save lives. MPHN urges everyone in the Murrumbidgee region to start the conversation by engaging in open and empathetic conversation to break the stigma around suicide and foster a supportive community. Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day 2024, BSI can announce the development of a new standard that aims to enable organizations to take a proactive role in suicide prevention. The standard will bring together best practices and provide a clear framework for organizations to implement effective suicide prevention strategies and support those affected by suicide. Recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics highlight the urgency of this work, as suicide rates in England and Wales have reached their highest levels in over two decades. In 2023, the male suicide rate rose to 17.4 deaths per 100,000, the highest since 1999. Female suicide rates also increased, rising to 5.7 deaths per 100,000, the highest since 1994. A dedicated committee of experts and stakeholders has been established to collaborate on the development of this important standard. Over the coming year, they will pool their collective knowledge to create a practical toolkit that organizations can use to support people and reduce the risk of suicide. We would like to thank everybody who has volunteered to work on this standard and we will continue to provide updates on the standard’s progress. If you work in the suicide prevention field or are a thought leader in this area and are interested in joining the committee, we invite you to apply here: https://bit.ly/4cUjDC9 #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #SuicidePrevention #WorkplaceWellbeing #BSI For immediate support, Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123, or visit https://lnkd.in/eVviRnP.

Social regulations are on the rise, making it essential for businesses to integrate social impact risks into their strategies. Proactively addressing issues like mental health, wellbeing, and workplace equity not only mitigates risk but also drives long-term success and resilience. #sustainability #mentalhealth #menopause
