I'm honored to deliver the keynote with a slightly provocative title **Everything You Thought You Knew About Energy is Wrong** at With Intelligence - Pension Bridge's Real Assets conference this December 9-10, 2024 at the Four Seasons Austin, Texas. It's time to bust some long-standing myths about energy transitions and separate facts from fiction. Why is it important to talk to bankers and asset managers? Unpopular opinion: they are the unsung heroes of energy transition. The real innovation isn't just in batteries or nuclear; it is in financial products that de-risk clean energy investments. This gathering brings together forward-looking investors who are updating their allocation strategies in real assets due to new market realities, including #energytransition and #climatechange. It will be a lively discussion. Hope you can join us. https://lnkd.in/dFjWkC7r

Pension funds around the world are significantly underinvested in infrastructure and will help drive growth as they tip more capital into assets that will be part of the global energy transition, according to a report by IFM Investors. Here’s what you need to know: ~ The path to cleaner fuels provides a “massive opportunity” for investors as more than A$100 trillion ($65 trillion) will be needed over the next three decades to restructure the economy, said chief strategy officer Luba Nikulina in the report ~ “As interest in infrastructure increases across the globe, the time has come to consider it as equally vital to the performance of institutional investors’ portfolios as those more traditional asset classes,” she said ~ Ports, energy transmission infrastructure and train stations are being added to infrastructure portfolios in addition to more traditional core assets like airports Read the full story on Bloomberg News. Many investors have pledged to go carbon neutral by 2050. The big question is how should they benchmark their portfolio. Next Tuesday May 14 at 10am EST, Frédéric Samama from S&P Global will present the S&P Net-Zero 2050 Carbon Budget Index Series at International Centre for Pension Management's Thought Leadership webinar series. These new benchmarks aim to align portfolios with where governments want to land and provide a scientific-based methodology that mirrors the recent IPCC report. 📢 Shaping the Future of Infrastructure Investment The infrastructure investment landscape is evolving rapidly, and three recent developments highlight just how dynamic this space has become: 1️⃣ UK Megafunds Initiative The UK government is taking a bold step to consolidate $1.7 trillion of LGPS and DC pension assets into "megafunds." This effort aims to enhance scale and efficiency, enabling investments into transformative projects that drive long-term economic growth. 2️⃣ Sustainability and Policy Alignment Despite shifting political climates, CalPERS has shown resilience in aligning its sustainability investments with long-term goals. Their ability to navigate challenges demonstrates how institutional investors can stay true to their missions while adapting to external factors. 3️⃣ Digital Infrastructure's Growth Potential DWS is setting its sights on digital infrastructure, recognizing the sector's pivotal role in shaping the economy of tomorrow. With plans for next year, they’re tapping into the high-growth potential of connectivity, data centers, and smart technology. These stories underscore the strategic shifts and opportunities in infrastructure investing—from scaling up funds to aligning with sustainability goals and embracing digital transformation. For those in the industry, they serve as a reminder of the critical role you play in building a more resilient and forward-looking economy. #Infrastructure #Investments #Sustainability #DigitalTransformation #Pensions #GlobalEconomy

It was a privilege to share the stage yesterday at the IRFA Conference with Thanzi Ramukosi, CFA, Narassa Govender and Saliem Fakir. We explored how we can achieve economic growth through infrastructure investing, opportunities in climate change and transforming our view of CSI initiatives. Economic growth is key to growing and protecting retirement savings. My key takeaways of the discussion are: 💡 We need a diverse and integrated infrastructure offering, where we focus on all types of infrastructure that affect our daily lives. 💡 Climate change has changed the way we live and we need resilient solutions, including infrastructure, to move forward. 💡 Corporate Social Investment needs to be a supportive function in the ecosystem of economic growth and collaboration across all stakeholders, public and private, is key. Thank you to the Institute of Retirement Funds Africa, especially Wayne Hiller van Rensburg for making it happen and Natalie Phillips for the opportunity. We reconnected with many clients and industry peers at the conference this year, and had important conversations about Infrastructure investing. Ninety One
