Today (3 December), on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are reminded of the importance of creating inclusive workplaces that value and support every individual. As professionals in Occupational Safety and Health, it is our responsibility to ensure that all employees, regardless of ability, are provided with safe and accommodating work environments. When conducting Occupational Risk Assessment studies, let us consciously consider the needs of persons with disabilities. This includes identifying and mitigating barriers, designing accessible solutions, and fostering a culture of understanding and equity. Together, we can lead by example, championing inclusivity and ensuring that our workplaces empower everyone to thrive. Let’s commit to making meaningful changes that promote safety, dignity, and opportunity for all. #WorkplaceSafety #ergonomia #health #occupational

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! This month, we recognize our commitment to building inclusive workplaces. The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the way we work by presenting challenges and new opportunities for accessibility and equity. New working models such as, remote work and flexible schedules benefited workers with disabilities. However, there are still obstacles as workplaces return to pre-pandemic norms. It’s on us to ensure these inclusive practices not only continue but become permanent features of work culture. New Hampshire Occupational Health Surveillance Program (NH OHSP) at the UNH IOD interviewed small business owners and workers statewide to better understand their workplace safety and health practices during the pandemic. Pandemic Impacts on the Workplace: Voices from NH Small Businesses sheds light on the lessons learned within our community, key findings, and the voices of affected NH small businesses and workers. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). One way to give people with disabilities access to a healthy workplace is through inclusive workplace policies. Here are some polices to think about during NDEAM: • Smoke-Free Workplace Policies: Create and apply policies to end indoor/outdoor e-cigarette and tobacco use to limit people breathing in harmful smoke. • Health Screening Policies: Create a workplace rule that gives all employees paid time off for cancer/health screenings. Pro Tip: Work with your employees to find accessible, local screening places. • Flexible Work Accommodations: Design policies that support reasonable work accommodations so employees with disabilities know they have flexible work options. #DisabilityInclusionNetwork #NDEAM
