#Mashru - a #handwoven fabric with #silk warp and #cotton weft with a satin weaves, know for its bold and bright stripes. The Mashru textile was woven for #Muslim communities, who believed that silk should not touch a person's skin. The weavers came up with a solution of creating a #satin #weave where silk is on the top side of the #fabric and cotton on the bottom that touches the body. The port town of Mandvi is known for its for Mashru weaving cluster. Unfortunately there are only 7 to 8 #weavers left whereas two decades back the town had over 700 weavers. #indiantextiles #artisanal #sustainability #handloom #culturalheritage #tamilnadu #naturalresources #naturalfibers #regenerativeagriculture #permaculture #bioremediation #hempindustry #juteindustry #textileindustry

HEMP FIBRE: "TO WEAVE, OR NOT TO WEAVE, THAT IS THE QUESTION?" The traditional way of making fabrics out of any fibre is to spin it into yarn and weave. There is also the lazy way out - lay the fibres in an even layer and tangle them together using punching needles 🙂 The resulting product will be widely different from a nice, woven fabric - you probably wouldn't want your shirt to be made out of a nonwoven (though technically speaking possible), but there is still plenty of other applications for such products. In our case for the moment it is mostly gardening (the one on the video is 100% hemp fibre mat precisely for that market) and filling for our duvets (by far the best option to cover yourself at night - https://lnkd.in/dvA3_xET), but I see plenty of other potential applications, from technical ones such as a "skeleton" for resinous composites, through furniture manufacturing to natural alternative for winter apparel padding. For me, thus, the answer to the "to weave, or not to weave" dillema is a resounding "it depends" 🤣 i.e. BOTH! -- Like my posts? Read Waag Futurelab's recent article by Karmijn Lange about the importance of local production and the reintroduction of natural dyeing techniques to improve sustainability within the textile industry. The process through which something is dyed not only has a huge impact on the sustainability of the clothes we wear but also on our understanding of craftmanship and local production. Natural dyes are often forgotten, or viewed as solely historical, but dyes are a key point in the textile industry. What is the history of natural dyes and how did they end up forgotten in the current production processes? Within an urban landscape, how can natural dyeing processes keep us grounded with nature? And how is the value of craftsmanship, local production, and natural dyes related? The most expensive fabric in the world is "Vicuña wool". Vicuña is a rare and highly prized textile made from the fleece of the vicuña, a wild South American camelid related to alpacas and llamas. The fleece is incredibly soft, lightweight, and warm, with a unique silky texture. 👉Key points about vicuña wool: ✅️Scarcity: Vicuñas can only be shorn every two to three years, and they yield only a small amount of wool per animal, making it very rare. ✅️Process: Harvesting vicuña wool is labor-intensive and involves capturing wild vicuñas, shearing them, and then releasing them back into the wild. ✅️Cost: Due to its rarity and the extensive process required to collect it, vicuña wool can cost thousands of dollars per yard, making it one of the most expensive fabrics available. Other high-end fabrics that are also notably expensive include cashmere, sable fur, and mink fur, which are also prized for their luxury and rarity. #fabric #luxury #textilelibrary
